Thank you for your interest in applying to work at Gillingham School. Our school was established in 1516 by several tenants of the manor who agreed to give up some of their land and buildings for the greater good of the community. We are very proud of our school, of our outstanding facilities and reputation in the community: it is a privilege to work here.

Our school motto, for as long as any of us can remember, is Docendo Discimus, meaning ‘By teaching we learn’. This historic motto underpins the values, beliefs and vision for our modern school. We recognise the importance of a consistently delivered, expertly crafted curriculum, implemented by a school full of expert teachers, each of whom embraces their professional obligation to improve. In order to support our colleagues, we prioritise a research informed professional development programme with dedicated time set aside. For example, all teachers in their first five years of teaching are given additional allocated time for professional development within their timetables. At Gillingham we are restless to improve: colleagues work collaboratively to share best practice and evaluate the impact of their work. Furthermore, there are also opportunities to access externally provided and certified professional development courses.

Our three core values underpin the expected behaviours of all members of our community.

• We are ambitious, take pride in our school and our learning is never disrupted

• We treat everyone with kindness and dignity

• We have the right to feel safe and happy

Positive relationships matter and, at Gillingham School, you will be treated with kindness and dignity. Our school prioritises developing good behaviours for learning so that teachers can teach and students can learn. Successful candidates will work in an environment where every single one of us is wholly committed to our work, but has time to enjoy life beyond Gillingham School, with family and friends. We seek to remove any unnecessary workload that gets in the way of great teaching.

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is an absolute priority at our school. Building and sustaining positive relationships with our children underpins all that we do and our pastoral care for each child is prioritised and well resourced.

Students leave Gillingham School equipped with the necessary skills and attitudes to make a positive contribution to a dynamic, diverse and multi-cultural society in the 21st Century. We are all ‘cultural architects’ in our school, fostering tolerance and celebrating diversity; promoting our civic responsibilities and school values; and developing resilient adaptable and ambitious learners. We expect our students to take pride in their work, to work hard and to celebrate each other’s successes.

Serving a rural community, we have always prioritised a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities for our students. There are an unbelievable range of trips, sports, arts events and other enriching opportunities provided for our students. Thus, there has been a long tradition of colleagues contributing to the wider life of the school.

Gillingham School is an inspiring and enjoyable place to learn, work and study. There are numerous opportunities to develop and progress your career at Gillingham School. We look forward to receiving your application.
