Music Teacher job summary
Calthorpe Academy is seeking an exciting and innovative Music Teacher, who will enjoy excellent resources and be provided with a stimulating environment. You will teach music in an adaptable framework that compliments each pupils stage of learning. All staff receive training such as positive behaviour support and communication. Special educational needs experience is desirable for this position and ECTs are welcome to apply.
Calthorpe Academy is part of Thrive Educational Partnership and is also a National Support School working in collaboration with various settings. We currently have 470 students with profound, severe and complex needs including Post 16.
Calthorpe Academy has been rated ‘good’ by OFSTED following our inspection in October 2023.
This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent and spoken English is an essential requirement for this role.

Job Description: Music Teacher
Reports to: Assistant Head/ Strategic Lead for Creative Arts
Salary: MP1/UPR + SEN
Job Purpose
To assist the Head Teacher in the leadership and management of teaching and learning in Music across the Academy, ensuring high-quality provision for all learners. The role will support the achievement of outcomes required by Government regulations and the Academy Development Plan adopted by the Board, while enriching learners’ communication, creativity, confidence, and wellbeing through music.
Professional Duties
To ensure learners make progress equivalent to or better than expected on the basis of prior attainment data.
To monitor learner progress and implement targeted strategies to address underachievement in individuals and groups.
To deliver teaching and learning that underpins and promotes the Academy’s ethos and values.
To design and deliver personalised music curricula for learners across all pathways (including offsite provisions), ensuring appropriate progression.
To deliver consistent, high-quality teaching that is engaging, inclusive, and innovative.
To collaborate with medical, physiotherapy, and speech and language therapy specialists to maximise learner outcomes.
To liaise effectively with parents, carers, and external agencies regarding learner progress and participation.
To co-ordinate and contribute to learner Progress Files, ensuring high-quality evidence of achievement.
Teaching and learning
To plan and deliver engaging lessons and sequences of lessons in music, ensuring learning is personalised to meet diverse needs.
To use a range of augmentative and alternative communication strategies as appropriate to individual learners.
To utilise varied teaching and learning approaches to provide pace, challenge, and creativity.
To ensure teaching reflects the diversity of learners’ backgrounds and promotes respect, inclusion, and mutual understanding.
To use assessment and attainment data to inform teaching and support personalised learning pathways.
To take responsibility for personal continuing professional development, ensuring skills and knowledge remain current and progressive.
To contribute to the sharing of good practice, innovation, and creative pedagogy across the Academy.
To contribute to regular curriculum review to maintain a stimulating, relevant, and innovative music curriculum.
Self evaluation
To participate in lesson observation and other measures to monitor teaching and learning outcomes, implementing improvements as required.
To engage with the appraisal process, identifying and pursuing personal professional development priorities.
To contribute to departmental and curriculum review, feeding into the Academy Development Plan.
To support the Academy’s self-evaluation processes for both internal purposes and external inspection.
Whole Academy
To represent the Academy in a manner consistent with its ethos and values.
To contribute to the whole-Academy team effort, ensuring a positive and inclusive learning environment.
To maintain high professional standards and contribute to the development of whole-Academy policy and practice.
Line Management responsibility to and for
Required by the Academy teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document to carry out the professional duties of a teacher under the reasonable direction of the head teacher of the Academy, and to report for the purposes of day to day management to Assistant Head/ Strategic Lead for Creative Arts.
Responsible for the management, direction and supervision as appropriate of designated employees and other people as specified by the head teacher.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Your employment is subject to satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (with barred list check where applicable) and is subject to the requirements set out in the Education (Prohibition from Teaching or Working with Children) Regulations 2003 (as amended). You are required to inform us immediately if you are the subject of a police investigation or receive any conviction or caution, or any occurrence that may disqualify you from providing childcare under the Childcare (Disqualification) Regulations 2009. Failure to immediately report such information will result in disciplinary action, up to and including dismissal.

Requirements
Qualifications and Training
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
A degree in Music, Music Education, or a related discipline is desirable.
Potential and ambition to develop professionally towards future leadership of Creative Arts provision within the Academy (Desirable).
Knowledge and Understanding
Strong subject knowledge across a wide range of musical styles, traditions, and practices.
Understanding of the role of music in supporting communication, creativity, wellbeing, and personal development.
Awareness of statutory curriculum requirements, including National Curriculum Music and RSHE links.
Familiarity with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) strategies and multisensory approaches.
Skills and Abilities
Ability to plan and deliver engaging and inclusive music lessons for diverse learners.
Ability to differentiate and personalise music learning for a range of abilities and pathways.
Ability to lead ensembles, choirs, and/or creative group music-making.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with learners, parents, carers, and professionals.
Confidence in collaborating with external music organisations and community partners.
