Pastoral Lead job summary
We are expanding our Senior Leadership Team by appointing a leader responsible for the pastoral care and safety of students, including those who board with us. This post is suitable for those with significant experience in a safeguarding and pastoral role and is open to both teachers and non-teachers.
The pastoral team play a crucial role in supporting students to manage their transition to EMS and their ongoing personal development throughout their time at the school. Some students come with a range of issues and specific emotional, mental health and learning needs, which require timely interventions and ongoing support.
We are seeking to appoint a Pastoral Leader to join our Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This is a new post which will build on the current capacity of the SLT to prepare the school for changes in the coming years. These include the building of a new boarding facility, working with others in an emerging network of maths schools and sourcing a new building for our main school, with a possible expansion to our catchment area. It’s an exciting time to be joining EMS and we want to be sure that our students’ needs continue to be at the front and centre of all we do.
The post holder will have half of their time dedicated to the leadership of pastoral care, boarding provision, safeguarding, the pastoral curriculum and SENCO functions. A teacher in post will have a 50% teaching load; if a non-teacher is appointed, they will take an active role in delivering some of the pastoral team’s services.

The successful candidate will be able to inspire those they lead and clearly articulate their vision to staff, parents, students and governors, they will be highly organised, reliable and empathetic.

Exeter Mathematics School (EMS) is a unique 6th form, created to meet the needs of able Mathematics students throughout the South West. The school is a learning community in which students' needs are at the centre. Students expect high levels of challenge coupled with thoughtful support and guidance. Approximately one third of students’ board mid-week (Monday to Thursday) and are supported by a team of pastoral tutors who ensure they are safe, cared for and well prepared to live independently once they leave EMS.
Students come from a variety of backgrounds. Most will be the only one from their feeder school, or their home town. The curriculum is demanding and students often find themselves challenged in ways that they have not been before. Many of the students are highly ambitious and/or highly able and need support in managing their expectations and the expectations of others.
