What skills and experience we're looking for

We are looking for a Pastoral Leader to support staff and students at Harris Academy Merton, promoting a safe environment with excellent levels of behaviour so everyone is entitled to learn. You will help overcome barriers to learning using a range of techniques, including: counselling and focusing on the academic, social & emotional wellbeing of students.

We would like to hear from you if you:

  • Hold QTS and a good undergraduate degree
  • Are an experienced teacher
  • Understand the theory and practice of effective teaching and learning.
  • Have knowledge of National curriculum requirements at KS3, KS4 and KS5
  • Understand the importance of havinghigh expectationsfor all students, both of behaviour and academic achievement.

Further details about the role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Meeting Academy targets on attendance and behaviour, as agreed with Assistant Principal, Vice Principal, Principal and Governing Body
  • Line managing tutors, including:
    • Ensuring regular phone calls to students who are doing well/are cause for concern
    • Ensuring they are managing the attendance of students whose attendance is between 95% and 100%, and that attendance certificates and rewards are distributed weekly
  • Improving the attendance of any student whose attendance falls between 90% and 95%, and ensuring less than 10% of students in Faculty become persistently absent
  • Taking responsibility for all students who are at negative boundary 2 to ensure poor behaviour does not continue to escalate towards negative boundary 3
  • Supporting tutors and allowing them to escalate for support asappropriateand take responsibility for tutor periods of any students who are disruptive

About Harris Academy Merton

Harris Academy Merton serves students from Year 7 to Sixth Form, and has twice been judged Outstanding by Ofsted. The current student roll is 1200, with a planned increase in our Year 7 intake over the next two years taking our numbers from 180 to 240 students. Applications for places greatly exceed the places available. The academy is set in seven acres of land, containing five teaching blocks, a sports hall, a full size floodlit all weather pitch plus four full size floodlit tennis courts and our own playing fields as well as an administration building containing the assembly hall and dining hall. We are favourably located for public transport with good local access to bus, mainline train and underground links, as well as on-site parking for vehicles and bicycles.
