What skills and experience we're looking for
The Northumberland Church of England Academy is a Multi Academy Trust that strives to provide a supportive, diverse and inclusive learning environment for staff and students.
An exciting opportunity has arisen at Thomas Bewick C of E Primary School in Ashington due to the retirement of the current post holder.
We are looking to appoint a dedicated and enthusiastic Primary SENDCo to work closely with the Headteacher to help lead the implementation and development of the SEND provision across our school. Although SENDCo experience is desirable, the NASENCo qualification is not essential. Professional development opportunities for the new SENDCO will be offered, including relevant statutory training as well as regular coaching from the Trust.
The newly appointed SENDCo will join our Trust team of Primary SENDCOs led by the Director of SEND. You will be an experienced and highly organised teacher who has a passion for meeting the needs of our most vulnerable pupils who may also have experienced a challenging start to their young lives. Our school serves the local community by providing a Two Year Old provision and a Nursery and supports our children until Year 6 when they transition to Secondary School. Early identification of our pupils’ needs is key and we work closely with parents/carers and external professionals.
The successful candidate will be part of the school senior leadership team and will work closely with an experienced Primary School Improvement team to play an essential role in supporting the school by ensuring that there is an inclusive and effective SEND provision that engages our pupils, their families and our staff.
This role will primarily be based at Thomas Bewick C of E Primary School, but the successful candidate may be asked to support at other sites within the Trust.
Please get in contact if you would like to visit our school. We look forward to receiving your application!
Please note, interviews for this position will take place across 26th – 28th June.
Main Responsibilities:
- Support the Director of SEND in the successful implementation of the Trust vision including its Christian character and contribute to significantly raising standards of achievement for learners of all ages and abilities.
- Support the development of systems for identifying, assessing and reviewing SEND provision.
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons that support the learning and development of the children.
- Attend consultation evenings and keep parents informed about their child’s progress.
- Champion the consideration and development of all aspects of innovative practice in relation to SEND provision and the needs of individual learners with SEND.
If you would like to become a part of a well established multi-academy Trust in the heart of Northumberland, then we look forward to hearing from you.

Thomas Bewick C of E Primary School is a one-form entry school of over 200 pupils with additional provision for the care of two-year-old children situated on Moorhouse Lane in the Hirst area of Ashington.
At Thomas Bewick, we strive everyday to adhere to our Academy LIGHT values, to love one another, include everyone, goodness is valued, hope for a bright future and be true to ourselves and be honest with others. As a result, Thomas Bewick is a happy, welcoming and friendly school where each and every child matters and their individual needs are our focus.
We encourage our learners to have a love of reading; whether it be stories, poetry or non-fiction. Storytime is sacrosanct and we feel it is imperative that the children hear a range of texts which are linked to their Enquiry for the half term. All staff are excited to share stories which they know the children will enjoy and broaden their horizons. Visit our Reading Corner to find out more! Our experienced staff make great efforts to create an environment where the children are engaged in a rich curriculum, inspired to learn further, happy and secure at school being surrounded by friends.
It is our aim that each and every child in our care can reach and surpass their potential. We welcome working closely with parents and carers to ensure that their children are achieving the best they can.
