Principal job summary

We are looking to appoint a Principal for Harris Primary Academy Orpington. The Academy was judged to be a Good school by Ofsted in Summer 2019 and is well placed for further improvement. We are interested to hear from experienced school leaders who want to join a highly collaborative Federation with a network of supportive Principals and mentors.

The academy is located in the borough of Bromley but is situated in a part of the borough with above average levels of deprivation. The post will suite a candidate wanting to make a difference in an area of need. Our students deserve a great Principal who can make a difference to their life chances.

The position would suit an existing Principal/Headteacher, or a Deputy, who has the leadership skills to build an outstanding academy. For first time Principals, we can provide the support needed in the form of individual mentoring from an established Harris Executive Principal, and for experienced school leaders we offer opportunities for progression to Executive Principalship.

Main Areas of Responsibility
As Principal, you will need to provide the leadership and management necessary to secure high quality teaching and learning to raise standards of achievement.

The Principal’s effective leadership will result in an academy where:

There is a positive ethos that reflects the Academy’s commitment to high achievement, effective teaching and learning, and good relationships
Staff, governors and parents have confidence in the leadership and management of the Academy
Staff and governors recognise their accountability for their tasks and contribute fully to the development and successful implementation of policies and practices
The life of the Academy and the curriculum effectively promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepare them for adult life
Effectiveness is kept under rigorous review, and links with the wider community contribute to students’ attainment and personal development
Efficient and effective use is made of staff, accommodation and resources
Delegated responsibilities to ensuring that finance and administration are effective, and the carefully costed development plan is focused on improving educational outcomes
Qualifications & Experience
The successful applicant must have a proven track record of school improvement, and have gained successful previous experience in leading, or as part of, an SLT to transform a school and raise outcomes. We are looking for a strong communicator who can demonstrate strengths in engaging with and inspiring not just staff, but also students and parents of the local community. You will provide the leadership and management necessary to secure high quality teaching and learning to further raise standards of achievement.

We are looking for an experienced senior leader with a successful track record of school improvement and who ideally has:

Qualified Teacher Status, Degree, Further relevant professional studies
Relevant Further Degree or NPQH
Thorough knowledge and understanding of current curriculum developments and how pupils learn
Leadership in curriculum development and in monitoring and evaluation strategies
Proven track record of raising attainment in an urban, multi-ethnic environment
Track record of raising standards in English and Mathematics and good knowledge of raising standards in Literacy and Numeracy

Harris Primary Academy Orpington is a ambitious two-form entry school which opened in September 2016 in Bromley on the site of the predecessor school. We believe that every child is different and that everyone deserves the opportunity to be happy, secure and successful. We are located just ten minutes from Orpington train station with good links on public transport and an large onsite car park.

The academy is surrounded by a large grounds which enables us to take our learning outside, including through Forest School. Our aim is to provide our pupils with a well-rounded and enjoyable education that ensures each child succeeds academically, physically and emotionally - preparing them for life in an ever-changing world. We have identified six shared values, which we develop with the children throughout the academic year: Respect, Unity, Cooperation, Aspiration, Responsibility and Integrity. Our evolving curriculum has been designed to challenge and inspire the children; exposing them to a wide variety of exciting experiences including visits, events, sports, music and drama but also time to reflect and respond.
