What skills and experience we're looking for

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Principal with the vision and commitment to build on the current success of the Voyage Learning Campus:

  • to provide strategic leadership for the Voyage Learning Campus, in partnership with the Management Committee and Local Authority, to embed a new offer with a strong emphasis on building skills and confidence in trauma informed and inclusive practice amongst leaders and practitioners
  • with a deep understanding of trauma and the needs of vulnerable children and young people and a passion to enable them to thrive personally and academically, to provide them with great choices in life
  • who is committed to excellence and who can inspire children and staff to have high expectations of achievement; every child at the VLC should graduate with direct experience of their own success and a strong sense of their skills and talents
  • to develop effective relationships between pupils, parents and staff and broker effective partnerships amongst the wider North Somerset education community to influence changes in practice
  • to make an active contribution to systems leadership discussions through participation in strategic Boards and Forums in North Somerset such as the SEND Community of Practice, the Strategic Schools Forum and the Children and Young People’s Partnership Board
  • to develop an innovative high quality learning and offer for the VLC to enable it to play a pivotal role in North Somerset’s vision and strategy for Education

The Voyage Learning Campus provides high quality alternative provision on two separate sites Weston-super-Mare. It’s broad and relevant learning offer in North Somerset supports children and young people who are struggling in their schools either due to medical or behavioural challenges. It is North Somerset’s Pupil Referral Unit for children and young people permanently excluded from school, but with a new and progressive remit to provide support earlier to learners through a preventative traded offer to schools. As such, it is central to North Somerset’s commitment to embedding relational practice in education and to building resilience and skills in every school. The Council is committed to providing new fit for purpose accommodation to enable the incoming Principal to support learners and schools through this innovative offer.

The Ofsted inspection in January 2017 recognised Voyage Learning Campus as a ‘good’ school and the July 2022 inspection confirmed that we continue to be a good school.
