Principal job summary

You won’t just transform our academy. You’ll transform our students’ lives.

You could wait a lifetime for an opportunity like this to appear again. Westbourne Academy has huge potential, but we need an exceptional leader to take us there. We need an inspiring and dedicated leader to embed a strong culture, improve attendance and ensure students achieve the outcomes of which they are capable.

At the heart of the Academy Transformation Trust, we deliver the best possible education to young people from relatively deprived urban backgrounds. We can boast a closely-knit, welcoming and passionate teaching team, students who want to make something of their lives, and a place at the very centre of the local community. In short, we’re an ambitious academy and we need an equally visionary Principal.

Let us be perfectly clear: we’re not just looking for another Principal and we’re not just looking for rapid improvement. As our trust’s name makes clear, we want you to deliver transformation: of the way we teach and learn, of student outcomes, and above all, the way our students see themselves and their futures.

Your dedication will make them realise that education is the key to success in life, and that with the right attitudes, skills and qualifications anyone can transcend their circumstances.

In return, we offer ongoing professional development to help you become the school leader you’ve always wanted to be. By joining us you will be working alongside a committed team with expertise in academy improvement, who have recently lifted two academies out of category to good, four from RI to good and one to outstanding.

What’s more, once you’ve made your mark on Westbourne Academy – we have a wealth of other academies that could benefit from your imagination and integrity as a member of the Trust’s senior management team.

If you are the visionary leader we need, we want to hear from you. For more information and to apply, please visit our career portal.

If you would like to visit the school, appointments with Garry Trott, Director of Secondary Education, are available. To arrange your visit, please contact Garry by email on garry.trott@attrust.org.uk.

If this post attracts sufficient interest before the closing date, we may decide to close and interview for this vacancy at an earlier date, so an early application is advised.

Westbourne Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare and safety of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. All offers of employment will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check, an online check, 2 satisfactory references and any other necessary checks.

Westbourne Academy is a calm and happy school. We are an inclusive academy. We support all students, regardless of their starting point, to achieve their potential and develop the skills necessary for employment and life.

Westbourne Academy is not just a school it is a microcosm of the world with students and staff from all around the globe. Between them, they speak 32 languages and their differing perspectives on learning and life makes this a unique academy. We also have the pleasure of 30% of our students speaking English as an additional language and value the cultural diversity they bring.

We try not to take ourselves too seriously but know that preparing young people for the adult world is an important undertaking. Since opening as an academy on 1 February 2013, attitudes, aspirations and expectations have been transformed. We believe that our circumstances are quite unique and, therefore, that we can make a massive difference to the students we serve.

Currently we have around 1000+ students. Many of our students do not have the easiest backgrounds and we are determined to ensure that we remove as many barriers to learning as possible. Around 30% of our students come from a disadvantaged background. We are delighted that Ipswich has been deemed an opportunity area for the Department for Education and look forward to taking an active part in this initiative to tackle disadvantage.
