Welcome
I am delighted to welcome you to Harrogate Grammar School. Our school’s reputation for excellence is widely recognised and we have an absolute commitment to ensuring that all our young people benefit from what the school has to offer.
Our core purpose is to provide ‘excellence for all’; every child really does matter and we work hard to encourage students to be the best that they can be, whether that is in academic studies, sport, music, arts and beyond.
We have a very clear set of values that help us to deliver ‘excellence for all’ based on a culture of respect, excellence, adventure, commitment and honesty. All members of our school community live out these values on a daily basis and this makes our school a very special place in which to learn.
In addition to our strong culture, we are committed to providing excellence through a curriculum – inside and outside of the classroom – that is both broad, balanced and well sequenced so that it allows students to know more and do more. In recent years, we have focused on research from cognitive science and this has helped us to fully understand how we can ‘make learning stick’. Our dedicated and highly professional body of staff are experts in their fields and this allows us to meet the needs of all children at our school.
At Harrogate Grammar School we are committed to safeguarding all members of our community through safer recruitment of staff and a commitment to the value of ‘professional curiosity’. Safeguarding therefore is at the heart of our school community and our Designated Safeguarding Lead is our Deputy Headteacher, Mr Tim Milburn.
Harrogate Grammar School was one of the first Teaching Schools in the UK and is a lead partner in the Red Kite Teaching School Alliance. Teaching Schools are centres for the training and development of teachers and are chosen because they demonstrate outstanding practice and have the capacity to help others improve. Our Teaching School, helps us to keep pace with national developments and places us at the very forefront of teaching practice.
We are also part of the Red Kite Learning Trust, a Multi Academy Trust that we have formed with local partner schools. We believe that by working in a strong partnership we can deliver an even better service and provide greater opportunities to our young people. Our Maths Hub and Computing Hub status, alongside our pioneering iPad for learning scheme, further enhances our provision.
We know that to achieve our core purpose we have to work as part of a three-way partnership between the student, the school and home. A strong and effective partnership with parents underpins the work we do in school and we look forward to working with you so that your child can be the best that they can be.
We want all the children who come to the school to enjoy their school days and to become kind, healthy, knowledgeable and productive individuals who go on and make a profound contribution to society.
The outcome of our absolute commitment to ‘excellence for all’ is our track record of impressive examination results at GCSE and A Level, making us one of the highest performing comprehensive schools in the country. We are very proud of the outstanding progress our young people make from whatever their starting point.
Neil Renton
