PSHE/Wellbeing tutor (Higher Level Teaching Assistant position) job summary

This is an exciting time to join the Outreach team for Gloucestershire Hospital Education Service (GHES) as one of our Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs) who will be delivering our PSHE/Wellbeing curriculum to every student.

We want all students to thrive and achieve their potential despite their medical condition. Underpinning the success of this is the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of each student. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring all of our students receive a high quality PSHE / Wellbeing curriculum that meets their needs as well as the statutory requirements. Whether it is working with students in their own homes, working remotely online, or with groups in our classroom, you will work with students to identify key milestones, develop strategies and skills, plan and deliver the PSHE /Wellbeing curriculum, and ensure they are well supported in the lead up to returning to their mainstream school.

This is a hugely rewarding role and the successful candidate would find themselves working in a team of highly motivated and creative teaching assistants and teachers.  The role is quite peripatetic and requires travelling across the county to visit children in their homes. Working days are varied ranging from delivering lessons in the outreach office, working online / remotely, travelling between homes and liaising with families and their other academic teachers.

We are looking for an individual who has experience of working with children with additional needs and professionals involved in the education system.

The ideal candidate will:
  • Understand the graduated pathway and the need for a student-centred approach
  • Have experience of planning and delivering lessons
  • Have a passion for the PSHE curriculum
  • Have experience of, or a good working knowledge of the other professional agencies we work with in education
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding, especially as much of the work takes place in the home
  • Be well organised, can work on their own initiative and manage their time well

Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with students, parents / carers, staff at GHES and professionals in education and other agencies, are all important qualities for this role.  A firm belief that a medical condition should not stop a child fulfilling their full potential is essential.
