What skills and experience we're looking for

We are proud that Outwood Academy Portland is rated Outstanding by Ofsted. We are an 11-18 academy based in the large friendly town of Worksop, near Sheffield and Nottingham.

Since joining the Outwood Family in 2012, our students have achieved impressive exam result success.

We have created an educational environment where staff and students constantly strive to improve; where teachers sharpen their skills and expand their repertoires to deliver an outstanding learning experience; and where teachers, classroom assistants, mentors, tutors, inclusion support assistants and students operate as a seamless team. This enables everybody, staff and students, to not only see but also help fulfil the potential in each other. Following its latest visit, Ofsted noted that our ‘teachers and support staff comment positively about the opportunities they have for regular training to develop their skills.’

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English & maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

Outwood Academy Portland’s Humanities department is hugely popular within the school, students often comment on how approachable, kind and enthusiastic we are. We consist of 3 Geographers, 5 Historians and 1 RS specialist; all who love working here and are passionate about securing the best outcomes for our students. All the Humanities classrooms are resourced with interactive whiteboards, visualisers and ample storage which will enable you to teach in a variety of ways.

While being supported by the Humanities team you will aso be aided by a Subject Director who works across the Trust, along with other RS specialists in other academies. We have a culture of sharing to support wellbeing and workload management, and time is always built into our Head of Department Development Days for this to take place. We all want the best for our students and by sharing expertise and best practices we believe we can achieve this. We help each other whenever we can, which includes support with planning, marking and sometimes even teaching. As a team we share the view that whilst our job is often challenging, we do it because it is hard and because of the positive impact we have on our amazing students day in, day out.

We are proud of the strides we have made in recent years to develop our curriculum for RS, with all students now sitting the AQA Short Course, and with the option for you to offer Full Course too. You will also work closely with our Head of Personal Development to plan topics which are delivered in our Personal Development curriculum where there is cross curricularcontent. As an academy, we encourage the development of whole school initiatives to support all our students in becoming global citizens and have the skills they need for their future. Arranging whole school events, celebrations and trips will be actively supported, giving you a great opportunity to shape our offer to the emerging needs of the local community. Our 'Deeps' programme will give you the opportunity to work with senior leaders across the academy, developing your skills and knowledge, and putting you in a great position for future career aspirations.

We look forward to welcoming applications from candidates who will help us in achieving the best possible outcomes for our amazing students. For further information, or to arrange a visit to the academy, please contact Christina Lakin, Head of Humanities - c.lakin@portland.outwood.com
