What skills and experience we're looking for

Join our fantastic school as we strive to fulfil our vision for all children to enjoy their rights and fulfil their dreams.

The Governors are seeking to appoint 2 community governors to join our strong team.

We welcome community governors who have a passion for achieving the best possible educational experience for the children in our local community. In addition, we want our community governors to work in a supportive but challenging way with the Senior Leadership of the school.

To be a community governor you should have:

  • A strong commitment to the role and to improving outcomes for children.
  • Good inter-personal skills, curiosity, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.

Knowledge of management, or business, or a passion for the arts will greatly improve the effectiveness of our governing board and have a positive impact on our pupils’ education.

Expectations of governors: The governing body has a vital role to play in making sure every child receives the best possible education. This is achieved by ensuring that governors have the necessary skills and commitment to contribute to the effective governance and success of the school. It is expected that governors will make use of the various training opportunities available to them and play a full part in the work of the governing body.

What the school offers its staff

Could you use and develop your skills on our Governing Board

and make a positive difference to children’s futures?

What does a governing board do?

The school’s governing board is responsible for:

> Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction of the school

> Holding the school leaders to account for the educational and financial performance of the school

> Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure money is well spent

The board is passionate about education and committed to continuous school improvement to ensure the best possible outcomes for our pupils.

About our school

St. Benedict’s Primary School is a happy and friendly school in Small Heath; OFSTED (January 2023) judged it be ‘Good’ and described children as thriving here. Our school serves a very diverse community; we currently have 29 ethnic groups and 32 different languages are spoken in our school. 98% of pupils are from minority ethnic groups and have English as an additional language. We celebrate our diversity and inclusivity and have been accredited as a School of Sanctuary.

We have one class in each year group, Reception to Year 2, and two classes in each year group in KS2. We also have a growing special needs Resource Base, for Cognition and Learning; and ASD. The Resource Base provision will grow over the next two years.

The school’s leadership team currently consists of Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and an Assistant Headteacher, as well as middle leaders. In addition to our class teachers, we have a SENco, Teaching Assistants, a Thrive practitioner and a pastoral officer.

Our Values

We are ambitious. We take pride in our learning, make progress and achieve.

We are resilient. We face challenges with perseverance and determination.

We are respectful. We are inclusive, enjoy our rights and respect the rights of others.

Our Vision

We are enjoying our rights and fulfilling our dreams.

Our Mission 2025-30

1 Become a leading school in sustainable curriculum innovation and development.

2 Develop a strong sense of identity, purpose and belonging.

3 Develop outstanding inclusive provision: all pupils make good progress and achieve.

What we’re looking for:

Contrary to popular thought, you don’t have to be a parent or connected to the school in some way to be a governor.

For the school, the main advantage of having you join our governing board is the expertise and experience you can bring to the role. Knowledge of management, or business, or a passion for the arts will greatly improve the effectiveness of our governing board and have a positive impact on our pupils’ education.

What governors get

Full training and support for the role is provided.

Working governors have the right to reasonable time off to carry out their public duties and some companies allow paid leave.

Experience tells us that our governors not only make a significant difference to the school, but also gain much personal and professional satisfaction from the role.

What we require of governors

Our Governing Board meetings usually take place 6 times per year, on Wednesdays (3 full days and 3 half days).

St. Benedict’s is committed to safeguarding children and governors are required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Further information about the school including its latest Ofsted report can be found via www.stbendic.bham.sch.uk.

To find out more, please just get in touch with Headteacher, Emma Nott. We’d love to hear from you.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our organisation is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. We expect all staff, volunteers and trustees to share this commitment.

Our recruitment process follows the keeping children safe in education guidance.
