What skills and experience we're looking for
Up Holland High School seeks a passionate, enthusiastic and committed Head of Department (Progress Leader) for Science who shares the ambition, aspirations and values of the school. You will need to be a leader and practitioner who consistently delivers high quality teaching with the ability to inspire, engage and motivate students. You will need have excellent communication skills, be ambitious and be able to build teams and lead people. Above all else, you will need to be ‘Dedicated to Excellence’ in all that you do, modelling to staff and students.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about school improvement, has an outstanding track record as a teacher of Science, with some evidence of prior leadership experience.
We have re-advertised the post on a higher TLR to demonstrate our ambition to secure the very best candidate for our rapidly improving school. The post will therefore suit both existing Head’ s of Science and aspirational leaders that already have some form of additional responsibility in their current role.

Students enjoy Science and as a result, the number of students choosing to study Triple Science in KS4 is above the national average. Students are taught Science by specialist teachers in well–equipped laboratories.
The Science department are a hard-working, supportive and collaborative team who are committed to building on their current strengths. As a ‘Stimulating Physics Network’ partner school with strong links to the Science Learning Partnership, the Science department have access to regular subject specific CPD. The improvement in the quality of education is a key aspect of our school improvement plan. We are therefore seeking an enthusiastic, dedicated and outstanding leader of Science to support colleagues within the department to raise standards and outcomes. The leadership of the department is supported by two Assistant Progress Leaders and an Associate Assistant Headteacher with a background in teaching and leading Science Departments, recognising the importance of shared work load. This investment in people and leadership structures demonstrates our commitment to improve the quality of education in Science and to secure sustainable improvements to outcomes.
The successful candidate can expect full-support and continuing professional development, as we promote a model of leadership at all levels and a bespoke and tailored CPD programme. Depending on experience, this includes the opportunity to gain accreditation to deliver external science CPD and to complete nationally recognised (NPQ) leadership qualifications. Once established in their substantive role, our progress leaders are also given opportunities to form part of an extended leadership team, should they wish to gain whole school leadership experience. This approach reflects our unwavering support of aspirational staff, creating pathways and opportunities that middle leaders seek on their journey to senior leadership.
