Science Technician job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Science Technician to join our Team. Under the direction of the Science Support Manager, the post holder will provide practical and administrative support to the Science Department., for 37 hours a week during term time only.

Science is a successful and forward-looking department which benefits from the purpose-built Science block, opened in October 2017. There are fifteen modern laboratories; they are spacious and well equipped and provide a very pleasant environment for teaching and learning. Five of the laboratories are used for Biology, five for Chemistry (each equipped with a mobile fume cupboard) and the remaining five are dedicated to Physics. There are three spacious and modern prep rooms and a comfortable staff room as well as a quiet work room for teachers.

The staff are dedicated professionals, committed to raising standards and improving still further the quality of teaching and learning. All the Sciences are taught by specialists: five biologists, six chemists and six physicists. They are very ably supported by three full-time, very experienced laboratory technicians as well as a full-time Science assistant.

In Years 7 and 8, students are divided into mixed ability groups and have seven one-hour Science lessons per fortnight. Students are placed in ability sets in Year 9 and above. At KS4, there are four periods of each Science per fortnight.

The examination results in all three Sciences at both GCSE and A level have consistently been very good. All GCSE students follow the AQA Science specifications, sitting exams in June of Year 11. Most students will certificate in the three separate Sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) though some may take a qualification in Combined Science: Trilogy.

In the School’s most recent OFSTED inspection, which took place October 2022, Science was ‘deep-dived’ and the Quality of Education was judged as ‘Outstanding’.

At KS5 there are nine periods per fortnight in each subject. There are four groups in Biology in Year 12 and in Year 13. There are four groups in Chemistry in Year 12 and in Year 13 and three groups in Physics in each year of the Sixth Form. Students follow the OCR syllabus at A-level Biology and Chemistry and AQA in Physics.

We are an oversubscribed mixed selective school serving Bourne, Stamford and Peterborough. Our students are well-behaved and motivated and are taught in modern and well-resourced facilities. The school offers 240 places to students in Year 7 and, with a growing Sixth Form of over 500, has expanded to become one of the largest grammar schools in the country. The vast majority of Year 11 students transfer into our Sixth Form where students are offered a choice of 26 A-Level subjects.

The best atmosphere, the best support, the best results

This is our purpose statement - we have no long or complicated mission statement. The order of the purpose statement is deliberate; we believe that if we get the atmosphere and support right then, given our able students and committed staff, good results will follow. The atmosphere is special and cherished by us all and something that interview candidates often remark upon. We are a large and busy school and our students are well-behaved, motivated and want to be here and their parents/carers want them to be here. Most of the students, most of the time, want to learn and enjoy lessons which are well-taught and engaging.

The teaching staff body numbers around 100 teachers supported by 40 non-teaching colleagues. All teaching staff are subject specialists and are only required to teach their own subject. Staff absence is very low, as is staff turnover. Staff who do leave often do so for promoted posts. All teaching staff at Bourne Grammar School are issued with a laptop and other benefits including no breaktime, lunchtime or bus supervision duties and free on-site parking. Tea and coffee are freely available in our two large staffrooms.
