Science Technician job summary

We are seeking to appoint a Science Technician to join the department from September. It is an exciting time to join the team as we are in the process of refurbishing the science labs to provide the best classroom experience for our students. Our previous technician is retiring after almost 20 years, so the opportunity doesn't come around very often. The successful candidate will play an integral role within the department, helping to prepare the labs and organising the equipment needed for the practical experiments.

The post will appeal to someone who is naturally comfortable in the presence of young people and enjoys being with them. A good sense of humour, a positive attitude and resilience are essential! The role is busy and varied, so you will need to have exceptional communication and organisational skills and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Previous experience of working with young people along with knowledge or an interest in science would be an advantage, however training and induction will be provided.

Please read the attached information pack for further information, including principal duties and person specification.

Benefits of working at Priestlands include:

  • Free on-site car park
  • Friendly and sociable colleagues
  • Enrolment in and generous contribution to one of the UK’s largest public sector pension schemes; LGPS
  • Eligible for reduced rate membership at NFDC leisure centres
  • Free and confidential Employee Assistance programme offering advice on a range of areas including well-being, housing and financial matters
  • Free eye sight test every 2 years
  • Professional development opportunities for all staff
  • Affordable on-site canteen

The post is for a total of 32.5 hours per week, (Monday to Friday). Hours will be discussed and agreed prior to appointment as there is some flexibility, but potentially a mix of early and late shifts, comprising of 07.45-14.45 and 08.45-15.45 per week which includes a 30 minute unpaid daily break.

References will be usually taken up prior to interview; if you currently work in a school, please ensure one of your references is from your current Headteacher. You will be required to provide appropriate evidence of identity and qualifications to support other pre-employment checks which will be undertaken on the successful candidate for this role, including: your right to work in the UK, a confidential health declaration, an online search of your name in line with government guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education, and a DBS application.

If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us. We look forward to receiving your application.

Please submit your application as soon as possible as we may invite candidates to interview before the closing date.

Disclaimer: due to the high volume of applications we receive, we reserve the right to close a vacancy earlier than the advertised date if we receive applications that meet the criteria. Once a vacancy has closed, we are unable to consider further applications, so please submit your application as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Our catchment area covers an area of outstanding beauty, stretching from Beaulieu in the East, to Brockenhurst in the North, and Milford-on-Sea at its most westerly point. To the south lies the Solent, providing one of the most popular sailing areas in the country. We serve eleven primary and junior schools, although our intake includes children from other schools, including a number of private schools.

Priestlands is an exciting school in which to work and we are proud of its many achievements. We are committed to being a leading comprehensive school that serves the entire community, provides high quality education across the curriculum and has ambitious plans for its continued success and development. Our headline GCSE results and progress score consistently place us among the top schools in Hampshire and the New Forest and demonstrate that Priestlands is consistently delivering positive outcomes for all groups of students, year on year.

We are proud of our academic record and believe all children are capable of making exceptional progress. We encourage them to embrace challenge, pursue excellence and to be resilient in overcoming obstacles. Above all we want to ignite in our students a love of learning which will serve them well throughout their lives.

However, Priestlands is about far more than exam results as our motto, Learn more… Do more… Be more…, implies. Our aim is to develop well rounded young people who have the skills and attributes to be successful in life and make a positive impact in our community.

We encourage all our young people to develop a sense of values and responsibility for themselves and other people. We aim to treat young people as individuals, recognising and respecting individual needs, aptitudes, interests and aspirations.
