Science Technician job summary

MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

As a key member of the science department, the Science Technician will play a vital role in supporting high-quality practical science education by ensuring the effective preparation, maintenance, and safety of equipment and materials.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Practical Support & Classroom Preparation

  • Support preparations of materials, equipment, and teaching aids for practical lessons for all staff teachers as directed by the Senior Science Technician and Director of Learning.
  • Ensure all equipment and resources are cleaned, tidied, and stored appropriately, maintaining a safe and hygienic working environment.
  • Safely manage and clean up breakages and spillages, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Support the senior science technician's practical demonstrations and experiments, assisting teachers and students in conducting practical work safely and effectively.

Student & Staff Support

  • Assist teachers in organising practical activities by ensuring that materials and equipment are prepared and set up in advance.
  • Provide technical support to teachers during practical lessons, including setting up demonstrations and experiments.
  • Help maintain an organised and efficient learning environment by ensuring equipment and resources are readily available.
  • Assist with the preparation of exhibitions, demonstrations, and displays as required.

Health & Safety & Compliance

  • Assist with maintaining safe and efficient working conditions in all preparation and laboratory areas.
  • Advise staff and students on the safe use of equipment, materials, and experiments in line with COSHH, CLEAPSS, and other safety guidance.
  • Stay updated with the latest safety regulations and ensure the department’s compliance with current legislation.
  • Conduct routine equipment checks and maintenance, undertaking minor repairs where appropriate.
  • Arrange or complete PAT testing for electrical equipment, ensuring accurate record-keeping.

Resource & Inventory Management

  • Support with issuing and collecting materials and equipment, checking for damage and missing items.
  • Assist with the maintenance of accurate stock control, ensuring sufficient materials are available within approved limits.
  • Assist in ordering and checking deliveries.

Professional Conduct & School Ethos

  • Support a positive and well-organised learning environment for all staff.
  • Uphold confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of students in line with school policies.
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism, teamwork, and reliability.
  • Hold an enhanced DBS certificate.


Other Duties
