What skills and experience we're looking for

Job Purpose:

To provide technical, practical, and administrative support to the science department, enabling the safe and effective delivery of practical science lessons. The Science Technician is responsible for preparing materials, maintaining equipment and the prep room, supporting teaching staff, and upholding health and safety compliance across all science labs.

Key Responsibilities:1. Preparation & Organisation

  • Prepare apparatus, chemicals, and resources for practical lessons across KS3–KS4

  • Set up and clear away practicals and demonstrations in coordination with lesson plans.

  • Assist teachers with practical delivery and support students during complex or large-scale experiments.

2. Health & Safety & Compliance

  • Support the Head of Science in ensuring full compliance with health and safety regulations, including COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and CLEAPSS guidance.

  • Maintain accurate risk assessments, safety data sheets (SDS), and chemical inventories.

  • Monitor safe storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals and biological materials.

  • Follow, maintain, and update the Science Technician Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Ensure all labs and prep rooms are compliant with current regulations and inspection-ready.

3. Prep Room & Resource Maintenance

  • Maintain the cleanliness, organisation, and safety of the prep room and storage areas.

  • Ensure equipment is maintained, calibrated (where necessary), and stored properly.

  • Arrange for repairs or replacements of faulty items in a timely manner.

4. Stock Control & Procurement

  • Monitor stock levels and order materials and equipment in line with budget procedures.

  • Ensure safe and correct labelling and storage of all incoming materials.

  • Keep stock inventories up to date and inform the Lead Teacher of shortages.

5. Administrative Support

  • Maintain lesson resource files and risk assessments for practical work.

  • Prepare teaching aids, displays, and visual resources to support curriculum delivery. This may include printing assessments.

  • Assist with the organisation and delivery of events such as Science Week and open evenings.

6. General Duties

  • Support the science department team as required in daily operations.

  • Attend relevant training to stay up to date with H&S and technical developments.

  • Contribute to the wider ethos of the school by maintaining a safe and purposeful environment for students.

  • Contribute to general school operations such as duties.

Person Specification:

Essential:

  • A good working knowledge of science practical work and laboratory safety.

  • Familiarity with health and safety standards, including COSHH and risk assessment procedures.

  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to work independently and within a team.

Desirable:

  • Experience working in a secondary school or laboratory environment.

  • Knowledge of CLEAPSS guidance and best practice.

  • Science qualification at A-level or higher.

  • Experience maintaining SOPs or procedural documentation.
