SECOND IN CHARGE OF ENGLISH & KS4 ENGLISH LEAD

JOB TITLE: Second in Charge of English & KS4 English Lead

BASED AT: Samuel Whitbread Academy

SALARY/GRADE RANGE: MPS / UPS plus a TLR 2C

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of the English Department

The Bedfordshire Schools Trust (BEST) is a multi-academy trust providing exceptional education across our community of 10 schools and five nurseries. Since forming in 2016, we have grown significantly into one of the largest single employers in Central Bedfordshire. We now educate more than 5,000 children across the area, from nursery age to advanced level study. It is our aim to grow the BEST in everyone, and everything we do is driven by our values, but our aims can only be achieved if we recruit, retain and develop the highest quality workforce – and we want those we employ to be valued in the workplace. The first five years of BEST has been a real success story – and we are looking forward to an exciting future, too.

Required for September 2024, a charismatic and dynamic individual to join the leadership team of our enthusiastic, skilled English Department. We offer an ambitious and challenging curriculum to inspire our students and to promote a love for our subject. Our Department is unique in that we pride ourselves on having a kind and supportive environment which means that our staff feel valued in a brilliant team of experienced Teachers.

The English Department is incredibly popular at KS5 and has over 60 students studying Literature and Language or Literature, both the Edexcel specification. At KS4, we follow the AQA specification and students study Romeo and Juliet, A Christmas Carol as well as An Inspector Calls, along with the Power and Conflict poetry cluster. KS3 at Samuel Whitbread consists of a Year 9 cohort and all students study a range of fiction (Noughts and Crosses and Animal Farm), as well as Shakespeare and a range of poetry, whilst also studying the art of rhetoric and dystopian writing. The role would suit professionals who have the drive and a determination to ensure that all children succeed.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding practitioner with the ability to inspire others to excel as well as the knowledge and ideas to continue the development of the KS4 English curriculum for the benefit of all student groups.

You would be required to teach across the full age range, from KS3 to KS5. Your application needs to express what you will contribute to the role based on your skills, knowledge and experience.

This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic, motivated and inspirational leader with the passion and drive to excel in their field.

This role will involve working closely with the students at Samuel Whitbread Academy and you will be engaging in regulated activity with children.

Samuel Whitbread Academy

We offer an exceptional academic and extracurricular experience at Samuel Whitbread Academy in an outstanding learning environment where students are expected to work hard and achieve their best.

In our last Ofsted inspection, we were judged as ‘Good’ with many outstanding features and over the next three years we have set ourselves the target of being Outstanding!

Our GCSE results are amongst the best in the Local Authority. We offer a well-balanced curriculum with plenty of choice to prepare our students for the next stage in their lives. Most of our students continue on to the Sixth Form, which is one of the largest and highest performing in the area - providing students with a huge range of courses designed to match the expectations of universities and employers.

Our pastoral care is exceptional and we have dedicated pastoral support teams for each Year Group. The Academy is also broken down into five houses, named after people who have made a distinctive contribution to our community. These provide the framework for the multitude of different competitions, celebrations and charity events that bring our school community together during the year.

Extra-curricular opportunity is a vital part of our ethos and we expect all of our students to get involved in at least one club or activity. There are a huge number of opportunities ranging from highly competitive sports teams to spectacular drama and musical performances.

We enjoy showing visitors around the school so please take the opportunity to come and see us during the school day, so you can see Samuel Whitbread Academy in action and we can answer any questions you may have.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
