Second in Charge of Science - Head of Chemistry job summary
The Role
We are seeking an enthusiastic and thoughtful leader to build on the progress made in the Science department over the school’s first seven years. We are a school that sees STEM opportunities and careers as a critical part of the way that we can support every one of our pupils to live lives of choice and opportunity. The successful candidate will work alongside our Director of Science, leading on key aspects of the department’s work, including one of the three subjects and assessment across the department. They will be a committed teacher with a track record of leading pupils to achieve great results. They will share the school’s vision and the belief that all young people can achieve at high levels. There will be significant career progression available for the successful candidate.
Key responsibilities
• Ensure that pupils are making appropriate progress in Chemistry, and that own teaching and learning is highly effective;
• Oversee the pastoral care of pupils;
• Oversee the curricula for one of the Sciences and hold staff to account for planning and reflecting on these in collaboration with Director of Science;
• Lead parts of departmental meetings and co-plan these with Director of Science;
• Lead on assessment across the department, including facilitating internal and external moderation;
• Create a purposeful learning environment;
• Support the Academy Leadership Team to set vision and direction for the Secondary phase in line with Academy vision;
• Set a vision and targets for pupil success;
• Track progress, regularly monitor reports on progress, identify and deliver interventions where appropriate;
• Align with and uphold the Academy vision, standards of behaviour, discipline and exclusion policy;
• Deal effectively and sensitively with child protection issues.
Other
• Undertake other various responsibilities as directed by the Academy Leadership Team; and
• Undertake the main professional duties of a teacher as set out in the Reach Academy pay and conditions of service document.
