Second in Geography job summary

Are you a dedicated member of staff looking to make a difference to young people’s lives?

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Second in charge of Geography to join and support the leadership of our Geography department at Northampton Academy. As Second in Charge, you will work alongside the Head of Department to help support and ensure outstanding progress for all our students in the school.

You will have a close eye to detail and be able to manage a large team, whilst retaining the highest possible standards. You will be incredibly tenacious with a high level of emotional intelligence. You will be an exemplary teacher of Geography and be fully committed to providing an excellent learning experience for students at the academy. You will play a major role in improving teaching and learning across the Geography department. The successful candidate will be highly ambitious and will be looking to become a Head of Geography in the next 2 – 4 years.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school of approximately 1700 students, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'good and improving' by Ofsted in November 2019. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are Respect, Determination, Ambition, Integrity and Tolerance. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Kitemark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

The leadership of the academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons. To this end, the student behaviour system is clear, simple and easy to administer in lessons. If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf. Teachers at the academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here. In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally
  • Genuine Flexi-working environment where all staff have the option of either a late start or early finish one day per week
  • Free access to on-site high-quality gym

Northampton Academy is committed to equal opportunities and to the protection and safety of all students and adults. We expect all staff and volunteers to share these commitments.

The post will be subject to an enhanced DBS Disclosure.

For more information or a confidential chat about this role, please contact Amy Patterson, Assistant Principal & SLT Link for Geography – a.patterson@northampton-academy.org or Jennifer Ryrie, Head of Geography – j.ryrie@northampton-academy.org

Closing date: Monday, 23rd January 2023 – 12pm
