Second in Science job summary

We are an oversubscribed, expanding school, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted with consistently positive outcomes at GCSE. We are seeking to employ an inspiring and enthusiastic Second in our Science Department. The successful candidate will be able to deliver sciences at key stages 3 and 4, Combined Science and, we anticipate, offer A-level specialism in Physics, Chemistry or Biology. We especially welcome applications from Physics and Chemistry disciplines, although applications from Biology specialists will also, of course, be welcomed.

The successful candidate will join a teaching team of 8 staff. Oldbury Wells has established A-level teaching in Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Psychology and teaches both Triple Science and Combined Sciences at GCSE.

This post will be ideal for a Teacher of Science ready for their first post of responsibility or a current manager interested in a new opportunity. They will join a strong faculty with a supportive head of department.

Oldbury Wells is a flourishing academy, the founding school of the Bridgnorth Area Schools’ Trust. At present our Trust comprises a family of six schools all based within South Shropshire. Our Trust is committed to supporting local education and enjoys strong partnership arrangements with all local primary schools. We are a comprehensive school with students across the whole ability range. We are located just 20 minutes from the West Midlands conurbation where we enjoy a small town location in Bridgnorth within easy reach of the Birmingham and Telford areas.

We have a very good track record in terms of examination results with excellent Progress 8, Attainment 8 and VA scores. We are in a position of strength as a school, with our students successful across the range of groups and across the full range of subjects. Oldbury Wells School also has an established and flourishing Sixth Form, recently relaunched and expanded as Bridgnorth Sixth Form.

Oldbury Wells School is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and young people and therefore expects all staff to share this commitment. All appointments are subject to a satisfactory DBS check.

Further details of this vacancy can be downloaded from our website, www.oldburywells.com. Alternatively please telephone 01746 760509 or e-mail Mrs Frances Sherrington, PA to the Headteacher, at frances.sherrington@oldburywells.com. The closing date is 9am on Monday, 14 October 2019.

Visits to the school may be arranged through Ms Lisa Thomas, Curriculum Leader, at lisa.thomas@oldburywells.com

Oldbury Wells School is a popular and successful 11-18 secondary school in the picturesque market town of Bridgnorth. It was the founding and lead member of the TrustEd Schools’ Partnership which on 1st May 2022 merged with the Central Shropshire Academy Trust to form the TrustEd CSAT Alliance.

The Trust is a family of nine schools based in South Shropshire and Shrewsbury. We are passionately committed to providing an excellent education for all our pupils and we are working together to secure that aim.

Oldbury Wells has secured strong Ofsted results for many years, most recently in 2018 when it was confirmed as ‘Good’ by Ofsted. The inspection report captures the strong practice which takes place throughout the school which make Oldbury Wells a ‘great place to be and great place to learn’ and captures well our values and ethos. Since inspection, school results at KS4 have improved further and provision and outcomes have remained strong throughout the Covid pandemic. There is every reason for the school to aspire to be 'Outstanding' and this is something we continue to work towards.

In relation to student’s outcomes, in 2019 Progress 8 was significantly positive; this had been the case for four consecutive years. Groups such as Pupil Premium students, SEND and Low Prior Attaining students’ progress very well (all well above zero in 2019). Our intake is slightly higher than national in terms of prior attainment, but not significantly so. High Prior Attaining pupils perform in line with national expectations, this group of students remain a key focus for us in terms of stretch and challenge across the curriculum.

We use school self-review and improvement planning thoroughly to guide our work. Our strategic objectives and clearly articulated development plans express our ambition to be an even better school. All members of the team contribute towards the development of the plan, with each area developing a plan which links directly into whole school objectives.

The school has been well subscribed in recent years and we have around 900 pupils on roll from Year 7 to Sixth form. Our sixth form is called Bridgnorth Sixth Form and we are the only school locally with sixth form provision, which provides our staff with an opportunity to develop practice into Key Stage 5 and beyond.

Our pupils are wonderful, and our parents are keen to support us and for their children to do well. We enjoy a strong local reputation, and our school community is proud of their school and wants it to enjoy further successes. Pupils arrive to us from Bridgnorth town, local Shropshire villages and from further afield (largely South Staffordshire / Wolverhampton). Our rural catchment means that more than 70% of our pupils arrive at school by bus, either local authority buses for Shropshire pupils, or from our own chartered buses for out of area pupils (at cost to those parents).
