SEN TA job summary

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS TEACHING ASSISTANT
Starting JANUARY 2020

We are looking to appoint someone who has experience of working with a child with SEN.

Experience of working in a similar role is ESSENTIAL

The Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) will be expected to work closely with the School Inclusion Manager and other members of the staff to support those pupils who have been identified as having special educational needs. To work under the direction of the School Inclusion Manager and class teachers in actively supporting pupils with special educational needs in the most appropriate ways to facilitate their access to the curriculum and help them towards full integration.

To provide special educational needs support primarily, but not exclusively, for pupils with a Statement of Special Educational Needs or EHCP. This type of support may require discreetness according to the needs of the pupil and might involve working with other individuals within the classroom.

To provide the agreed support for pupils with special needs across the whole range of subjects, areas, age group and difficulties, including disabilities and emotional and behavioural difficulties and in a variety of learning situations. Such support might include simplifying instructions for tasks, repeating instructions, breaking down tasks into more manageable components, supporting pupils in school break times and lunchtimes, encouraging pupils to stay ‘on task’, preparing appropriate resources, aiding note taking, reading questions in tests out loud or explaining words, generally giving guidance, encouragement and praise.

To contribute to discussions on matters regarding appropriate provision within the class to maximise the pupil’s participation and potential. This might involve discussions on the ability of the pupil, (their strengths, weakness and preferred learning styles) or on the type quantity of work that a pupil is expected to do within a given lesson or subject area.

To assist in overseeing the safety of pupils with special educational needs in all lessons including break times and lunchtimes as directed.

To assist in the monitoring and assessment of pupils with special educational needs and contribute to discussions related to their progress; e.g. keep weekly records of success and difficulties.

There may be a need to carry out medical duties; e.g. checking insulin levels, changing feeding bags and changing nappies.

Any other tasks considered appropriate to the post.
