We are seeking to appoint a compassionate, patient, and enthusiastic Teaching Assistant to join our dedicated team, to support pupils with a range of SEN needs. You should be child-centred in your approach and be able to demonstrate initiative, a willingness to be flexible and the ability to adapt calmly to ever changing situations.

Main Purpose of the Job:

To support teaching and learning across the school, in and outside of the classroom, working under the supervision of the class teacher, department lead and senior leadership team. To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To promote every pupil’s inclusion within the life of the school (curricular, social, personal) ensuring their equality of opportunity.
  • To work under the guidance of teaching/senior staff to implement agreed work programmes.
  • To support individual pupils on intervention programmes.
  • To assist the teacher in curriculum planning, management & preparation of resources.
  • To provide support for teaching staff across the school ensuring an appropriate learning environment.
  • To assist with the teaching of pupils; whole class, small groups and individuals as directed.
  • To be an integral part of the school, working in close partnership with all staff.
  • To care for the general safety and welfare of pupils and their hygiene and personal needs.
  • Assist with manual handling of pupils

Job Activities

Planning

  • To assist with the development and implementation of Individual Pupil Plans (educational and social)
  • To work with the teacher in lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lessons/work plans as appropriate
  • Monitoring and Assessment

  • To provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement
  • To monitor and evaluate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observation and planned recording of achievement against pre-determined learning targets/objectives
  • To be responsible for keeping and updating records as agreed with the teacher, contributing to reviews of systems/records as requested
  • To undertake marking of pupils’ work and accurately record achievement/progress
  • To liaise sensitively and effectively with parents/carers as agreed with the teacher and participate in feedback sessions or meetings as directed
  • Teaching and Learning

  • To implement agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to the individual needs/learning styles of pupils
  • To implement local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, and make effective use of opportunities provided by other learning activities to support the development of relevant skills
  • Develop and promote pupils independence, social and communication skills, equal opportunities and racial equality including support for pupils in the community
  • To support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
  • To help pupils to access learning activities through specialist support
  • To administer and assess routine tests and invigilate exams/tests
  • Behaviour Support

  • To assist in engaging pupils and keeping them focused on tasks set and supervise structured play programmes where appropriate
  • To help pupils to develop positive interpersonal skills
  • Implement and support the school’s policies and procedures, individual behaviour plans and the reward systems
  • To provide comment as required on behaviour and learning to teachers and other professionals
  • General

  • To have an understanding of the broad range of Special Educational Needs (specific learning difficulties, complex learning difficulties, moderate learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorder, emotional behavioural, mental health & social communication difficulties, ADHD) with reference to how this effects pupils’ learning
  • To encourage pupils to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage all pupils in group activities
  • To be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • To provide general clerical/admin support e.g. administer coursework, produce worksheets for agreed activities etc.
  • There may be a requirement to provide additional pupil support on school transport outside of the school day.
