What skills and experience we're looking for

Job Overview:

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Special Needs Teaching Assistant (SEN TA) to join our dynamic and inclusive team at Mackie Hill, working both within The Hive, our special needs provision and within the classroom. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting children with a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN) within a child-centred, inclusive mainstream school environment. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of children with diverse learning needs and is committed to providing tailored support to help each child thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support in the Classroom:Assist the class teacher in delivering individualised learning plans for children with SEN, ensuring that all pupils can access the curriculum in a way that meets their individual needs.
  • 1:1 and Small Group Support:Work closely with students on a one-to-one or small group basis, providing targeted interventions and support to children with a variety of learning, communication, and physical needs.
  • Promote Inclusion:Support the integration of students with SEN into the mainstream classroom, promoting inclusion and ensuring that pupils are fully engaged with their peers and activities.
  • Behavioural and Emotional Support:Provide emotional and behavioural support to help students manage their feelings, build resilience, and develop social skills. This may involve using specific strategies to de-escalate challenging situations and encourage positive behaviour.
  • Collaborate with the SEN Team:Work alongside the SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), other teaching assistants, and external professionals (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists) to ensure that students receive comprehensive support.
  • Monitor Progress:Assist in the tracking of students' progress, contributing to reviews and reports. Work with the class teacher to set achievable targets and adapt teaching strategies as needed.
  • Assist with Personal Care:Provide appropriate personal care where necessary, including supporting with toileting, feeding, and mobility for students with more complex needs.
  • Safeguarding and Well-being:Maintain a caring and supportive environment where all students feel safe and valued. Be vigilant and report any concerns regarding the health, safety, and well-being of students.
