SEN Teaching Assistant, Level 3 job summary
The role:
We are looking to appoint a SEN Teaching Assistant, who will work in partnership with classroom teachers to differentiate appropriate support for pupils with Special Educational Needs.
To meet the needs of the school, the successful candidate will be required to work predominantly in Year 5 this year but as a SEND TA, can be asked to work with children across all year groups.
Successful candidates will be highly motivated, positive and enthusiastic, love working with children and helping them to strive to achieve against their targets.
What we are looking for:
The successful candidate should
- Be able to develop positive relationships with young children
- Be able to stay calm and objective when presented with unusual or challenging behaviour
- Have experience of supporting children with moderate to severe SEN needs, including autism, ADHD, behavioural, social and emotional learning difficulties, speech and language needs
- Be enthusiastic and committed to working as part of a team
- Be a confident and clear communicator with parents
- Have GCSEs or equivalent level, including at least a Grade 4 (previously Grade C) in English and Maths
You must be willing to:
- support and uphold our Catholic ethos
- design and prepare resources to support language development and understanding as well as resources to support children with difficulties in cognition and learning
- implement strategies as recommended by professionals, e.g. Speech and Language Therapist, which might include, but are not limited to, teaching language through categorisation tasks and games, sequencing activities, pre and post tutoring of key vocabulary, and using a phonological and semantic approach when teaching new vocabulary.
- work in consultation with the class teacher to create an environment which is language rich, in terms of spoken language and the use of complementary communication systems such as visual symbols.
- lead interventions that target reading comprehension, word reading, and spelling.
Essential criteria:
- NVQ3 or equivalent
- A high standard of spoken English
- high expectations and a strong commitment to raising standards
- work with initiative and be self-reliant when appropriate
- a high standard of general education with good numeracy and literacy skills
Desired criteria:
- Have experience working with children with SEN on both a 1:1 basis or within the general classroom environment
- Experience supporting children with moderate to severe SEN needs including autism, ADHD, behavioural, social and emotional learning difficulties, speech and language needs
- Knowledge of the Early Years, KS1, KS2 curriculum
- confident in using ICT to support children
- Knowledge of teaching phonics and early mathematics
