What skills and experience we're looking for

We seek to appoint a SEND Learning Mentor to support in maintaining high standards of student attendance and punctuality to lessons. Whilst attendance is in line with the national average, it continues to be a whole school priority and we are always seeking to improve key students’ engagement with our whole school learning environment. This role will be about re-engaging SEND students with the classroom and supporting them to attend lessons successfully.

Interested candidates will ideally have a good knowledge of Social, Emotional, Mental Health and SEND and prior experience of school attendance procedures and processes, however, whilst experience with attendance procedures would be an advantage, this role may also suit those with experience as a teaching assistant or other relevant areas such as LAC and Pupil Premium.

This role will be incredibly fulfilling but equally as demanding. We require someone who has strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and negotiate in a patient and resilient way, whilst smiling and remaining positive throughout. You will be part of the Learning Support Team and line managed by the SEND Provision Lead, but will liaise with the attendance team and teaching staff.

The successful candidate should:

  • Be motivated to work with children and young people to ensure they are successful
  • Have a commitment to, and belief in, the equal value of all students
  • Have an ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young people
  • Have emotional resilience in working with challenging behaviours and attitudes to use of authority and maintaining discipline
  • Have the ability to implement relevant highly effective behaviour management strategies with children and young people
  • Have the ability to raise self-esteem and expectations of children and young people
  • Have experience of supporting students within a secondary school environment
  • Have knowledge and understanding of SEND
  • Have strong ICT skills, especially in the use of Word and Excel

What the school offers its staff

  • Regular staff wellbeing activities and social events
  • Free access to our sporting facilities (up to 6pm weekdays)
  • Health Assured (Employee Assistance Programme) - a free confidential information, support, counselling and advice service available 24 hours a day
  • School funded flu jab on site, organised through a local pharmacy
  • Eye Care Vouchers for employees using a VDU
  • Employer Pension Contribution – Teachers’ Pension Scheme (Teachers). Local Government Pension Scheme (Non-Teaching Staff)
  • Maternity / Paternity / Adoption Leave and Pay

Further details about the role

This is a permanent post.

The hours of duty are 8.10am – 3:10pm for 4 days and 8:10-4:00pm one day a week to support with homework club, (including a daily unpaid break of 40 minutes) term time plus training days.

Commitment to safeguarding

At The Latimer Arts College, we are a community. Together, we are committed to ensuring that everyone in our school is happy, feels safe and is valued. We are over-subscribed, with approximately 1200 students aged 11-18 who are nurtured and guided through their education in a purposeful and caring community ethos based on respect for all.

With our students at the heart of all that we do, we encourage each member of the community to uphold our core values of Honesty, Excellence, Ambition, Respect and Teamwork. We encourage the development of core characteristics and skills, such as leadership and resilience, to ensure students leave with the skills required for employment and future success. We also model the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance for those with different faiths and beliefs. We aim to make a positive contribution to both our local community and the wider society.

We have a passionate belief in the value of a well-rounded education and it is our intention to unlock the true potential within each and every individual, whatever that may be. We work collectively to motivate our students to place no boundaries on their ambitions, no limits on their aspirations and remove any barriers to their achievement. Through our high expectations we want to inspire our students to achieve excellence and be the best that they can be.

Our staff are one of the secrets of our success and so we are fully committed to their wellbeing and professional development.

We seek to appoint staff who thrive on collaboration, innovation and a desire to be amazing: colleagues who will have a passion for improving student achievement and personal development and be bursting with ideas as to how to achieve this. It is our job to nurture you to deliver this success.

We have a highly successful induction programme for new staff, including an ECT programme, and we offer an extensive range of training throughout this.

We are committed to the DfE Education Staff Wellbeing Charter and have a varied programme of activities and support in place for our staff. This is responsive and evolves annually based on context and needs, with our staff voice being instrumental in shaping what we provide. We have a very small staff turnover and staff morale is high, this was evident in the last Ofsted report and in regular staff voice, as well as by the fact that staff choose to send their own children to the school.

We are passionate about supporting professional development so that we can ensure we are equipping our staff team with the skills, knowledge and understanding that they need to not only fulfil their roles but most importantly to be fulfilled by their roles.

The wider curriculum

We have a thriving House system, with two forms from each year group making up one of our four Houses. This system epitomises the caring, community ethos, and encourages a little healthy competition too!

At The Latimer Arts College we passionately believe that participation in enrichment activities plays a significant contribution to personal growth and high academic achievement. That is why we provide a range of extended opportunities throughout, and beyond, the academic year. There is an expectation that all staff will offer enrichment and this is factored into directed time.

Our Facilities

Ensuring that our staff and students can thrive in a positive learning environment is one of our key priorities. Each learning area is well-equipped with the specialist resources that individual subjects require.

Significant investment has been made in the site in recent years which means that we are the proud owners of a state-of-the-art Science Block, the Masque Theatre, a multi-use Sports Centre and a 4G all-weather pitch. In addition to this we have a separate Sixth Form and Staff Café and a new Sixth Form Centre is opening soon. Not only do these provide great facilities during the school day, but they are also available for community use.

We continue to invest and innovate to improve the learning environment for all. The Latimer Arts College provides an excellent environment to both teach and learn in.
