SEND Teaching Assistant

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, hardworking and caring teaching assistant to join our school team to support children with special educational needs and disabilities through direct work with children, supporting our SENCO and working with other professionals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work under the guidance of teaching staff and/or SENCo to support the delivery of personalised speech and language programmes.

  • Provide 1:1 and small group interventions focused on developing language and communication.

  • Assist pupils in accessing the curriculum, adapting resources where needed.

  • Observe, monitor, and record pupils’ progress and provide feedback to the class teacher and SENCo.

  • Support classroom management and maintain an inclusive, supportive learning environment.

  • Work in partnership with professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists (SaLTs), Educational Psychologists, and external agencies.

  • Communicate effectively with parents/carers about children’s speech and language development, as appropriate.

  • Help with administrative tasks such as preparing resources or maintaining assessment records.

  • Follow safeguarding procedures and contribute to pupils’ overall well-being.

    Essential Criteria

    Experience- Experience working with children in a school or early years setting
    - Experience supporting children with speech, language, or communication needs (SLCN)
    Knowledge and Skills- Understanding of child development and learning
    - Knowledge of strategies to support SLCN
    - Ability to implement and adapt speech and language support plans
    - Good communication and interpersonal skills
    - Basic ICT competence (e.g., using Microsoft Office, communication apps)
    Personal Qualities- Empathetic, patient, and nurturing approach
    - Able to work effectively as part of a team
    - Flexible and proactive
    - Committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children


    Desirable Criteria- Specific training in speech and language support (e.g., ELKLAN, Talk Boost)
    - Knowledge of Makaton or PECS
    - Experience working alongside SaLT professionals
    - First aid training
