SENDCO - Assistant Headteacher job summary

It is an exciting time at Becket Keys Church of England School (Outstanding, 2014). We are working hard to build upon the exam successes of our founding cohorts, whilst also establishing our new 6th Form into its sixth year.

Due to our current SENCO relocating, we are seeking a suitably qualified colleague to continue the excellent work of the department. This demanding position will see the successful candidate joining our highly successful senior leadership team. We feel the role would suit someone who is currently an assistant SENCO or a SENCO who is looking for a role on the senior leadership team of a school.

This post is a vital appointment in terms of fulfilling our Christian vision and ambition for our inclusive school to secure and enhance positive life chances for our most vulnerable students. As such, we are determined to recruit a highly capable, dedicated and ambitious professional who will add value to the school in ensuring excellent levels of academic progress and provision.

We would expect a demonstrable unstoppable passion for supporting our most vulnerable students and those with barriers to learning. However, our expert Trust (The Russell Education Trust) will always provide further training, advice and support.

The successful candidate will be able to model outstanding teaching in the classroom to develop the practice of all staff. We would expect the appointee to teach around 8-12 periods per week – preferably in an Ebacc subject.

The successful candidate will lead our dedicated inclusion team to support our students. We do not use ‘teaching assistants’ but instead prefer to use ‘learning support technicians’ who support the ‘assess plan do review’ process - keeping the responsibility for delivering all SEN support with the class teachers who are always the experts in the room.

The successful candidate will also need to have the skills and experience to deal with parents, local authority officers, educational psychologists and SEN specialist teachers. It is a particularly demanding role in this respect as there can be very difficult conversations to be had and these must be handled skilfully and sensitively.

Commitment to safeguarding

Our school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will need a full DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check, which can be applied for once a job offer is made.
