SENDCO job summary

We are looking to develop the strategic role of the SENDCo and as part of this development, the SENDCo will be part of the Senior Leadership Team. This will ensure that all aspects of SEND provision are integrated into the whole-school leadership and planning of the school.

PURPOSE

The core purpose of the SENDCo is to work with the Headteacher and members of the senior leadership team to provide professional leadership and management for the School with regard to the strategic development of SEND policy and provision in school. At Holywell, this will be rooted in the context of Christian faith. It is an essential requirement that the post holder understands and is committed to the Church’s mission in education and can interpret that mission for Holywell as a Church of England Academy school in their daily leadership of the school. This will promote a secure foundation from which to achieve high standards in all areas of the school’s work.

We are also looking to develop the strategic role of the SENDCo and as part of this development, the SENDCo will be part of the Senior Leadership Team. This will ensure that all aspects of SEND provision are integrated into the whole-school leadership and planning of the school.

The SENDCo also ensures the implementation of the SEND policy on a day-to-day basis. The SENDCo is the key point of contact for colleagues and offers support and advice for the identification of needs and suitable provision to meet those needs. Through provision management the SENDCo maintains an overview of the progress of students with SEND and will seek to develop practice to ensure the effectiveness of interventions and support.

In addition, the SENDCo is required to carry out the functions of a teacher in accordance with the Teacher Standards and the stated aims and objectives of Holywell School. You are also required to carry out the duties of a school teacher as set out in the relevant paragraphs of the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and as the Headteacher may reasonably direct from time to time.

To gain success the SENDCo will:

Effectively support the management of teaching and learning

Promote excellence, equality and high expectation for all students

Play a supportive role in the formulation and delivery of the school’s vision, leadership and direction

Evaluate school performance and identify priorities for continuous improvement

Deploy resources to achieve the School’s aims

Carry out day-to-day management, organisation and administration

Secure the commitment of the wider community

Create a safe and productive learning environment which is engaging and fulfilling for all students

Work effectively with the School’s governing body

Improve the life chances of children and young people

You must, at all times, carry out duties with due regard to the School Code of Conduct, Safeguarding guidelines and Equal Opportunities requirements.

Holywell School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment.

Applicants will undergo appropriate child protection screening including checks with past employers and the Disclosure & Barring Service.

Holywell School is a caring, distinctively Christian, community-focussed Church of England School. We aim to continue the historic tradition of Church of England Schools by providing a Christian Values-inspired education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice. As a school, we are a loving, supportive community with high aspirations for all. We promote inclusion, we are proud to belong and we value each individual. We look after each other, believe in second chances and aim to be the best we can be so we can serve and support the common good.

Our vision is to ‘Live life in all its fullness’. We aim to be an outstanding Christian learning community where everyone is valued as a unique individual and where everyone feels safe. We will aim to be the best we can possibly be, to treat others as we wish to be treated and to make a positive difference to our community and beyond. We strive to be peaceful problem-solvers with open minds and hearts, living God’s love and being kind.

We are a popular and oversubscribed school of 700 students. 2021-2022 will see our final year of expansion. Although situated in the Local Authority of Central Bedfordshire, we straddle the border and have half of our population from Bedford Borough schools. Students are largely drawn from the two villages of Cranfield and Wootton. There is an increasing number of ‘out-of-catchment’ students who are applying to the school because of its good reputation. As part of Central Bedfordshire’s ‘Schools for the Future’ development programme, we are currently exploring a long-term plan to evolve into an 11-16 secondary school.
