Senior Assistant Principal job summary

About this role

The St Bart's Multi Academy Trust, in partnership with Governors, staff and children of Abbey Hill Academy and College are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our hard working and committed team.

At Abbey Hill Academy and College our children come first. High expectations, mutual trust and respect are underpinned by a warm, supportive ethos. The successful candidate will be working alongside a team of caring, enthusiastic, dedicated staff, who are well-supported by their Senior Leadership Team.

This role would be suitable for candidates with either Primary, Secondary or a Special Educational needs background. The role is based predominately at our Norton site but the successful candidate will have weekly time allocated at the main school site in Meir.

This would be to start in September 2024 or sooner where possible.

Main Purpose of the job

The Senior Assistant Principal will be responsible for the day-to-day management of our expanded satellite provision

Carry out the duties of this post in line with the remit outlined in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document including the conditions of e employment for Assistant Principals and the Academy’s own policy

The Senior Assistant Principal will support the Executive Principal and Vice Principal in:

  • Communicating the academy’s vision compellingly and supporting the Executive Principal’s strategic leadership
  • The day-to-day management of the academy
  • Formulating the aims and objectives of the academy
  • Establishing policies for achieving these aims and objectives
  • Managing staff and resources to that end
  • Monitoring progress towards meeting the academy’s aims and objectives

Duties and responsibilities

School culture and behaviour

The Senior Assistant Principal will:

  • Create a culture where pupils experience a positive and enriching school life
  • Uphold educational standards in order to prepare pupils from all backgrounds for their next phase of education and life
  • Ensure a culture of staff professionalism
  • Encourage high standards of behaviour from pupils, built on rules and routines that are understood by staff and pupils and clearly demonstrated by all staff
  • Use consistent and fair approaches to managing behaviour, in line with the academy’s behaviour policy

Teaching, curriculum and assessment

The Senior Assistant Principal will:

  • Establish and sustain high-quality teaching across subjects and phases, based on evidence
  • Ensure the teaching of a broad, structured and coherent curriculum
  • Track and analyse pupil performance data, paying particular attention to disadvantaged groups such as those eligible for the pupil premium, those with special educational needs, or who speak English as an additional language (EAL)
  • Plan and implement interventions
  • Use valid, reliable and proportionate approaches to assessing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the curriculum
  • Ensure the use of evidence-informed approaches to reading
  • Ensure pupils are entered and prepared for accredited courses and statutory testing (as appropriate)
  • Be an excellent role model, exemplifying a high standard of teaching and promoting high expectations for all members of the academy community

Additional and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)

The Senior Assistant Principal will:

  • Promote a culture and practices that allow all pupils to access the curriculum
  • Have ambitious expectations for all pupils with SEND
  • Make sure the academy works effectively with parents, carers and professionals to identify additional needs, and provide support and adaptation where appropriate
  • Make sure the academy fulfils statutory duties regarding the SEND Code of Practice, including the annual review process
  • Ensure continuous professional development for staff in order to meet the needs of pupils

Organisational management and school improvement

  • Under the direction of the Executive Principal, the Senior Assistant Principal will:
  • Establish and oversee systems, processes and policies so the academy can operate effectively and efficiently
  • Ensure staff and pupils’ safety and welfare through effective approaches to safeguarding, as part of duty of care
  • Take responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the academy
  • As appropriate, undertake activities related to professional, personnel, and HR matters
  • Ensure rigorous approaches to identifying, managing and mitigating risk
  • Ensure effective use of budgets and resources
  • Identify problems and barriers to school effectiveness, and develop strategies for school improvement that are realistic, timely and suited to the academy’s context
  • Make sure these school improvement strategies are effectively implemented
  • Work closely with the relevant team(s) to ensure the effective running and maintenance of the academy building
  • Analyse provision data on attendance, behaviour, suspensions and wellbeing to inform future improvement strategies

Staff management and professional development

The Senior Assistant Principal will:

  • Performance manage relevant staff, including carrying out appraisals and holding staff to account for their performance
  • Support the induction of staff new to the academy and those being trained within the academy as appropriate
  • Manage staff well with due attention to workload
  • Participate in the selection and appointment of teaching and support staff as appropriate
  • Ensure staff have access to appropriate, high-standard professional development opportunities
  • Keep up to date with developments in education
  • Seek training and continuing professional development to meet their own needs
  • Ensure adequate staffing, including providing cover where necessary
  • Carry out duties of a school teacher as set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.

Governance, accountability and working in partnership

Under the direction of the Executive Principal, the Senior Assistant Principal will:

  • Work with Trust leaders and those responsible for governance as appropriate
  • Ensure the provision effectively and efficiently operates within the required regulatory frameworks and meets all statutory duties
  • Work successfully with other education settings and organisations
  • Maintain working relationships with fellow professionals and colleagues to improve educational outcomes for all pupils
