  • BPS recognised degree in Psychology
  • Successful completion of a recognised post-graduate training course in Educational Psychology
  • Eligibility for registration with the Health & Care Professions Council
  • Relevant experience with children and young people, prior to training as an educational psychologist·

  • Experience of carrying out psychological assessments and interventions in a variety of educational settings
  • Experience of managing a complex caseload and meeting deadlines

Job Description

Job Purpose:

To promote the achievement and wellbeing of children and young people, especially those with Special Educational Needs and/or other barriers to their learning and development. Under the direction of the Head of School they will deliver a full range of generic psychological services covering consultation, assessment, intervention, research and training functions to support the development of pupil attainment and wellbeing. They will offer parents/carers support and guidance in understanding and meeting the needs of their children/young people so as to promote their achievement and wellbeing.

Main Responsibilities:

Strategic Direction and Continuous School Improvement

  • Work alongside the Head of School to oversee the development of effective systemic therapeutic support and intervention that is available to all pupils.
  • Support the Head and Deputy Head of School to establish an outstanding school and drive continuous improvement.
  • Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead and Lead for Children Looked After.
  • Build highly effective relationships with pupils, families and communities.
  • Work collaboratively with Local Authority and other partners.
  • Work within a leadership team across the MAT.
  • Adopt a flexible solution focused approach to the development and delivery of psychology within our school environment.
  • Direct and line manage the SEMH Practitioners within the Specialist in the Trust (SIT Team) and review caseloads during timetabled team meetings.
  • Act as a model of professional conduct and presentation, demonstrating high standards of expertise and commitment.
  • Ensure the protection and safety of pupils through effective approaches to safeguarding, as part of keeping children safe in education.
  • Lead the continuing professional development of staff based around aspects of mental health and emotional wellbeing, setting high expectations for your own performance and that of others.
  • Act as a team leader for Performance Management of the SIT Team.
  • Establish and oversee systems, processes and policies based on the wellbeing of pupils and barriers to education, that enable the school to operate effectively and efficiently
  • Participate in recruitment and selection of staff.
  • Contribute to quantitative and qualitative analysis of pupils targets and present at committee meetings.
  • To contribute to the schools systems for supervision, appraisal and staff development within the SIT Team and wider school cohort.
  • Through consultation, provide training and supervision to promote staff wellbeing and moral amongst the workforce.
  • Provide an applied psychology service across all settings within Hospital School including in hospitals and a range of community venues across local and neighbouring authorities.

Formulation & Assessment

  • Deliver targeted and specialist psychological services of consultation, assessment (including psychometric summative approaches), advice, planning and development work in school.
  • To provide emotional support to pupils within an alternative education setting
  • In collaboration with staff develop appropriate Personal Development Plans
  • To formulate interventions, monitor and evaluate the effectiveness based on pupils progress
  • To report on pupils progress.
  • Maintain written records of work carried out in line with HCPC guidelines.
  • Contribute to plan, do review process.
  • Maintain a flexible approach to case work. Contributing to long term planning and responding to more immediate needs of pupils as required.
  • Negotiate plans/strategies for intervention with pupils and their families.
  • Negotiate plans/strategies for interventions with school staff.

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities

  • Ensure the school holds ambitious expectations for all pupils regardless of their additional and special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Support the Head of School to establish and sustain culture and practices that enable pupils to access the curriculum and learn effectively.
  • Ensure the school works effectively in partnership with parents, carers and professionals, to identify the additional needsand special educational needs and disabilitiesof pupils, providing support and adaptation where appropriate.
  • Understand the SEND code of practice and how to evaluate the quality of provision for learners with SEND.
  • Work collaboratively to ensure that all learners have access to the right educational provision, including the provision of transition support and professional development for staff in any new setting.
  • Engage effectively with information gathering, assessment and sharing of information relevant to the educational and other development needs of learners to ensure the best outcome and support.
  • Apply best practice in data sharing protocols.
  • Provide high quality advice to support the implementation of EHCP applications, including statutory psychological advice, as required by the SEN legislation and Code of Practice.

Professional Development and Training

  • Implement RTMAT’s Professional Reflection and Development approaches.
  • Challenge practice that does not result in the best outcomes for pupils.
  • To develop further expertise in a specialist area of educational and child psychology
  • Undertake a research theme and development projects in identified areas of need and/or interests.
  • In order to carry out these duties effectively the post holder will be required to maintain ongoing professional development in relation to new developments in Psychology and Education.
  • Offer advice and guidance to help and support parents/carers better understand the needs of their children/young people.
  • Ensure staff have access to high-quality, sustained professional development opportunities, aligned to balance the priorities of whole-school improvement, team and individual needs.

Working in Partnership

  • Work collaboratively with the SIT Team and wider school team to bridge the gap between education and mental health and wellbeing.
  • Build constructive relationships beyond the school, working in partnership with parents, carers and the local community.
  • Work collaboratively with other schools and organisations in a climate of mutual challenge and support.
  • Establish strong working relationships with fellow professionals across other services such as social care and health to improve educational outcomes for all pupils.
  • Develop relationships with various health professionals to strengthen schools network to better support children/young people with mental health conditions.
  • To work in collaboration with the specialists in the Trust to develop policies and evidence based practice that lead to raising standards across the school
  • Attend multi agency meetings and conferences as representative of the school.
  • Under the direction of the Head of school work in collaboration with external stakeholders to offer a variety of outreach interventions and strategies to support schools, young people and their families.

Governance and Accountability

  • Understand and welcome the role of effective governance, upholding the obligation to give account and accept responsibility.
  • Establish and sustain professional working relationship with those responsible for governance.
  • Ensure that staff know and understand their professional responsibilities and are held to account.
  • Ensure the school effectively and efficiently operates within the required regulatory frameworks and meets all statutory duties.
  • Support the Headteacher to build a community of local Governance that listens to the voice of all stakeholders and has the needs of pupils at the heart of all decision made.

General Miscellaneous

  • The post holder must ensure they are registered with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Association of Educational Psychologist (AEP) is optional.
