Senior Teaching Assistant job summary

DO YOU SHARE OUR PASSION TO INSPIRE EVERY YOUNG PERSON TO REACH THEIR POTENTIAL?

2 role available: STA Transition / STA Reading

Hours of work: 32 hours per week / Term Time 38 weeks + 2 additional weeks during school closure.

The Whitehaven Academy is part of Cumbria Education Trust. CET is a growing multi-academy trust based in Cumbria; and is committed to creating outstanding, innovative and inspiring learning environments for our schools and their communities. The successful candidates will be joining CET at an exciting time, as we continue to build on our successes and move forward on our journey to establish ourselves as one of the highest performing MATs in the North of England.

This is an excellent opportunity to join The Whitehaven Academy at a pivotal time for its future. There has been significant financial investment to redevelop the school which moved into its state-of-the-art new building in 2022 and new sports facilities added in 2023. The school continues to expand, and we were again oversubscribed for Year 7 admissions in September 2024.

We are looking for outstanding candidates to enhance the learning of students who have a wide range of learning needs. As we expand as an academy it is essential that we ensure every student has the support they need to be the best they can be. There are two Senior Teaching Assistant (STA) roles: STA Transition and STA Reading.

The STA for Transition will work closely with our T- band group. This is a smaller group of students who are full of potential but not yet secondary ready. In Year 7, T Band study English, Maths, Geography, History and Languages together, following the main curriculum, but with more significant in-class support. As students’ progress out of T Band and into the main school, the class will reduce in size. In Year 8, a smaller T Band group studies English, Maths and Languages together. The Transition STA, will also be heavily involved in liaising with local primary schools as part of our Transition programme, ensuring that we gain the right information for all students with SEN so that that can make a flying start to life at The Whitehaven Academy. This role would be ideally suited to colleagues with either Key Stage 2 or 3 experience.

Improving and inspiring reading is central to the work we do at The Whitehaven Academy. The role of STA Reading is ideal for a candidate who shares a passion for helping young people develop as readers. The STA for Reading will work as part of a team delivering high quality reading interventions to small groups of students. The role will involve planning, monitoring and tracking the impact of the interventions and adapting to the needs of the students. We have a big emphasis on reciprocal reading strategy across the whole school and the STA for Reading will support in further embedding this across all areas of the curriculum to ensure all students continue to develop their reading skills. We have a well resourced Library, where students are encouraged to develop their reading for pleasure, as well as further develop their comprehension when accessing different texts. We are keen to hear about other successful reading interventions that candidates have experience of delivering. This role would be suitable for any candidate who is committed to helping young people develop their confidence as readers; has experience as a TA in either primary or secondary; enjoys working with other colleagues to develop a book-rich environment.

The successful candidate for either role will:

  • Have relevant experience in a similar environment or appropriate qualifications.
  • Should hold appropriate academic qualifications to at least GCSE standard, professional qualifications to at least NVQ level 2, or be able to demonstrate competency through proven experience in a similar role.
  • Have good inter-personal skills, be able to operate as a member of a busy team and be able to seek and accept guidance and support as required and as offered.
  • Have the drive, initiative and ability to respond quickly to further developments in the provision of learning support in schools.

If you have the qualities required, along with the passion and aspirations to contribute to the success of the Academy and the MAT, then we would welcome an application from you.

We recognise that some candidates may wish to be considered for both roles, whilst others will want to focus on only one of the posts. In your supporting statement of the application, please state whether you wish to be considered for one or both roles.
