Further details about the role

The successful candidate’s duties will include the following:

  • unlocking the school in the morning before school starts and ensuring that the site is clean and remains secure;
  • locking the school in the afternoon after school closes and ensuring that the school is secured after all teachers have left the site;
  • undertaking general caretaking and maintenance duties;
  • reporting items needing repair;
  • working with the school’s cleaning company to ensure that internal and external areas remain clean, tidy and safe;
  • assisting in the decoration of the school;
  • supporting at community events, e.g. school fetes;
  • maintaining the school's grounds, including the supervision of external companies carrying out related work;
  • advising and collaborating with the Headteacher and Head of School to develop and improve internal and external areas of the school site;
  • ensuring that stock levels are maintained on items such as cleaning products;
  • contacting and communicating with outside contractors for major repair work;
  • checking that heating, lighting and alarm systems are working properly;
  • liaising with and supervising utility companies;
  • coordinating drills for fire safety, lockdown and evacuation procedures; and
  • championing health and safety around the school and supervising external contractors.

The caretaker will also be required to unlock and lock the school on some evenings and weekends to accommodate external lettings; however, this will be paid or time in lieu given.
