Sixth Form Counsellor job summary

We are seeking a counsellor to support our Sixth Form students for 1 day a week.

Main Areas of Responsibility:

  • Responds to referrals and assess referrals individually for suitability of counselling intervention

  • Provides age appropriate counselling designed to support learning for individuals and groups.

  • Manages a caseload and maintains confidential client records and counselling information on students as appropriate.

  • Maintains up to date skills through regularly assessing training and maintaining membership of appropriate professional bodies.

  • Daily check in with Lead School Counsellor to discuss cases and wellbeing

  • Assists students to explore and examine their own feelings, beliefs, values and behaviour to support their learning and interpersonal skills.

  • Enhances students’ educational achievement through support and guidance

  • Prepare counselling schedules on a weekly basis, keeping the overview up to date.

  • Record no shows on the overview, email students to remind them of the 2 no show rule

  • Email students/staff with details of their next appointment date and time

The successful applicant will:
  • Have a Diploma level qualification (Level 5+) Would consider L4 for the right candidate.

  • Have counselling experience post qualification and accreditation or registration with an appropriate professional body.

  • Be qualified to work with young adults age 16 and above

  • Be familiar with Gillick competence and Fraser guidelines

  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills with young people.

  • Be able to manage confidentiality within the constraints of safeguarding guidelines and requirements.

  • Have a positive regard for young people

  • Have a flexible approach

  • Be calm, patient and non judgemental

  • Possess good organisational skills

  • Have the ability to work under pressure

  • Be able to work as part of a team

  • Receive a minimum of 1.5 hours monthly 1:1 supervision (supervisors details required)
