Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) job summary

High View School are seeking an exceptional Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to join our dedicated team and lead the strategic and operational development of SEND provision across our school. This is an exciting opportunity for an exemplary practitioner who is passionate about enabling all children to thrive, whatever their individual needs.

The successful candidate will ensure that pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) receive high‑quality, effective teaching and support. You will oversee the day‑to‑day operation of our SEND provision, maintain strong communication with pupils, families, staff and external agencies, and uphold our statutory responsibilities under the SEND Code of Practice.

This is a pivotal leadership role with significant impact on the educational experience and outcomes of pupils with additional needs.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership

  • Lead the strategic development of SEND policy and provision.
  • Ensure the SEN policy is embedded in practice and aligned with school improvement priorities.
  • Monitor, review and evaluate the quality of SEND provision across the school.
  • Maintain knowledge of national and local SEND initiatives to ensure best practice.
  • Ensure effective and impactful use of SEND funding.
Operational Management
  • Manage the day‑to‑day operation of the SEN policy.
  • Maintain an accurate SEND register and provision map.
  • Guide staff on the graduated approach to SEND support.
  • Coordinate specific interventions and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Act as the key point of contact for external professionals and agencies.
  • Analyse assessment data for SEND pupils and report on progress.
Support for Pupils
  • Identify pupils with SEND and ensure appropriate support is in place.
  • Secure and coordinate additional services and external expertise.
  • Ensure detailed, up-to-date records are kept and shared appropriately.
  • Lead reviews of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
  • Promote inclusion and ensure all pupils have access to the full curriculum and school life.
  • Support effective transitions, including to other settings or schools.
Leadership & Staff Development
  • Work closely with the headteacher and governing body to meet Equality Act 2010 duties.
  • Prepare information required for statutory reporting.
  • Lead INSET and training to develop staff expertise in SEND.
  • Line manage teaching assistants and support staff working with SEND pupils.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive culture across the school.

The successful candidate must hold (or be working towards) the NASENCO qualification.
