What skills and experience we're looking for

Based at our new Post 16 provision at The Bridge, which is a site on the Talbot/Newfield campus, we are seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to join our Student/Pastoral Support Team. This is an essential role in school in ensuring that high expectations and routines are maintained. Successful candidates will be confident in de-escalation techniques and be able to build excellent relationship with staff, pupils and parents. You will be able to:

  • To support pupils in their self-regulation to enable them to settle to learn
  • To implement agreed behaviour intervention programmes with individuals/groups, in or out of the classroom
  • To support teachers in the personalisation of activities to improve settled behaviour for learning
  • To develop a deep and wide-ranging understanding of the reasons behind different behavioural difficulties through personal development, research and training in order to provide a range of personalised strategies in response
  • To ensure learning environments are organised
  • To train in team teach and to be part of the team teach training team
  • To monitor the recording of behavioural incidents within their area
  • To understand therapeutic approaches
  • To skilfully use active listening, empathic understanding and unconditional positive regard
  • To be flexible in response to need across other key stages
  • Working with Leadership in ensuring effective procedures for Safeguarding children are applied in school and carry out the role of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • Support school attendance monitoring and follow up on issues
  • Provide support to children including informal counselling support where appropriate
  • On occasion this role may require supervision of a class in the short-term absence of the teacher

Governors are looking for an enthusiastic and committed person who is able to meet the Higher Level Teaching Assistant standards or has the equivalent qualifications or experience. You must demonstrate excellent numeracy / literacy skills equivalent to NVQ level 2 in English and Maths, had training in relevant learning strategies e.g. Read, Write, Inc., Big Maths, possess expertise in ICT and some competence around augmented communication strategies eg. Makaton, Rebus, PECS. The successful candidate will have the ability to deal professionally with all of the school’s stakeholders, including pupils, visitors, school governors and parents.

You will be confident in supporting and leading classroom learning and be resilient to respond to the day to day needs of the school, you should also have the ability and motivation to organise your own workload and priorities. Working across a range of ages and abilities you should have experience of managing students with challenging behaviour with a range of complex needs including severe learning difficulties, physical disabilities and communication difficulties.

All Teaching Assistants are required to be proficient in Safe Moving and Handling techniques and Team Teach, and training will be provided as necessary.

Seven Hills School is a co-educational secondary special school co-located with a Catholic High School near the centre of the city. We cater for pupils from 11 to 19 years of age. The school is maintained by Sheffield Local Authority (LA). All pupils have learning difficulties and many have other associated difficulties relating to communication, behaviour, sensory, physical and/or medical disabilities. In common with many other special schools, pupils admitted have increasingly complex needs. A high proportion of pupils are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
