SUBJECT LEADER FOR ENGLISH job summary

Main purpose of the post

• To promote the aims, values and ethos of the school and lead by example

• Work as a member of the leadership team to ensure a high standard of education provision for pupils across the School

• To lead English across the whole school with regular support from the Senior Leadership Team

• To be an excellent classroom practitioner and lead by example at all times

• Actively participate in whole school self-evaluation and school improvement planning

• To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young people within the school

• Undertake the duties of a teacher as specified within the school

• Work with colleagues within the leadership team to monitor children’s progress and attainment and continue to raise standards within the school

• Be responsible for leading and co-ordinating curriculum development, planning, teaching, learning and assessment within School

• Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school

• Develop effective professional relationships with all key stakeholders including colleagues/parents/Governors/external bodies and the wider community

• Demonstrate consistent high standards of personal and professional conduct, acting within the statutory frameworks which set out their professional duties and responsibilities

Strategic Leadership in the School

• Demonstrate an ambitious vision for the school and strive for high expectations for every pupil by setting high standards and leading by example in all areas of work

• Constantly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses in the school and use the findings to actively promote improvement

• Work alongside other leaders to promote and sustain an effective leadership model that is focused on the rigorous implementation of school improvement plans

• Effectively develop strategies for improving teaching, seeking out and modelling best practice, monitoring the quality of teaching and learning and putting in place systems to constantly improve Teaching and Learning across English

• To focus on improving teaching and learning to pursue excellence for the school

• Ensure that a consistent approach to policies and procedures is adhered to

• Work effectively with the governing body, parents, members of staff and other schools as representative of the SLT

• To lead and work closely with other phase leaders to ensure effective transition across phases

Leading, Teaching and Learning - Specific Responsibilities
• Be responsible for the overall quality of Teaching and Learning in English, ensuring that effective learning takes place and provides high levels of achievement

• To monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Teaching and Learning within English under the direction of the Senior Leadership Team; provide evidence to support judgements made around Teaching and Learning and feed this back to the Senior Leadership Team

• Be the lead teacher within English, setting high expectations, providing support and advice to colleagues within the phase to ensure high levels of achievement by pupils

• Lead 1:1 developmental sessions for Teachers within English to ensure targets set within Teacher enhancement plans are being achieved in-line with Teacher Standards and provide feedback to the Senior Leadership Team in order to support the appraisal process

Leading, Achievement- Specific Responsibilities
• To have an overview of whole school achievement with a responsibility for achievement of pupils in English

• Facilitate termly pupil progress meetings for Teachers

• To provide a termly analysis of attainment and progress data to the Senior Leadership Team with a particular focus on DA pupils

• Ensure effective assessment systems are fully embedded and promote high standards of achievement in English

Leading, Inclusion (alongside the SENDco) - Specific Responsibilities
• To work alongside the SENDco, to ensure that individual pupil needs are met through effective implementation of support plans

• To ensure that intervention timetables are established in order to meet the needs of the pupils on the SEND register

• To ensure that all staff within your phase deliver high quality intervention, providing support and training when necessary
Leading, General Organisation- Specific Responsibilities
• To ensure that staffing is sufficient and organised during unstructured times including break time and lunchtime
• To co-ordinate assemblies alongside the SLT, ensuring good coverage of themes throughout the year
