What skills and experience we're looking for

The Royal School is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative subject leader of social science, to lead learning and teaching of psychology and sociology in our heavily oversubscribed all-through, day and boarding free school. The aptitude and willingness to teach a range of abilities from ages 11-18 is essential. The ability and enthusiasm to teach with a flair and passion is crucial as well as a flexibility to contribute within the department and to the development of a love of learning. We are looking for the best candidate to join the team so all applications are welcome and the ability to teach up to A level would be essential. Are you the person to stretch, challenge, support and inspire our students in and outside of the classroom? Are you able to show management and leaderships skills? The school’s distinctive ethos and culture where a truly holistic view of the personal development of the child is central to all that we do. The wider ‘enrichment’ programme at this all-through 4-19 boarding and day school is essential and helps develop confident pupils well equipped for life beyond the school. All staff contribute to this extensive programme with their personal interests and to join in with existing activities. The social science department is at an important stage in securing the highest standards of learning and teaching for children in the school community. The department has two dedicated rooms. Across the school there are multiple Chromebook and laptop trolleys, giving access to technology to staff and students across the school. The school has entered a significant building programme where all areas of this well-established school will be brought up to the very highest standards. The department is eager to improve the standards and ‘passion’ of IT and computing for all students. We currently teach GCSE from year 9, spreading the demands of the specification over three years, offering the best opportunity for students to fully master all topics. Social Science is a very popular subject at GCSE and A-Level. At present, there are three groups in KS4 and six groups in KS5 and with the increasing numbers to the school, the team want to build on the positive exam success of previous years. Alongside the growth in pupil numbers, there will be an expansion in the curriculum, enrichment activities and improved facilities, enabling us to extend and enhance still further the range of opportunities for all our young people. As a result of The Royal School’s excellent CPD programme and the supportive team, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to: develop professionally; improve and extend their knowledge; develop skills and experience; share outstanding and innovative practice; and contribute to the development of an exciting, challenging and supportive learning environment in and outside of the classroom. The Royal School has achieved excellent academic results throughout its history and has an outstanding reputation for nurturing and developing confident, well-disciplined and successful individuals who progress successfully to the next stage of their life and career. We relish this next phase in its existence which enables us to review and build on our current success in preparing our young people for a rapidly evolving world. We hope that you will share in this passion for a broader educational opportunity.
