This is a broad course covering key biological molecules, cells, exchange, genetic information, core biochemistry, physiology of major organ systems, populations and ecosystems as well as recombinant DNA technologies and gene expression. The course is applied and culminates with three terminal exams at the end of the two years. Much of the assessment centres on practical techniques and approaches. Mastery of the correct terminology is critical as well as an appreciation that maths based questions, including statistical analysis, are integral to the course.

Medical Science is a Level 3 general applied vocational course offered to approximately 140 students at the college. The course aims to provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills in key scientific principles to support progress to higher education or employment in areas of Medical Science. We have a well developed set of curriculum resources to teach the course and ties to several medical institutions, including The University of Southampton, allowing us to enrich the curriculum with visits, talks and online experiences in the area. We have high expectations of our learners and students on this course achieve approximately 40% higher A*-B grades than the national average. Students undertake challenging coursework units over both years covering Physiological measurement techniques, Medical Science Research Techniques and Medicines and Treatment of disease alongside the examined units. We are constantly aiming to improve the learning experience and employability options for our students and our current focus is exam success.
