About Portland Academy

We cater for approximately 168 students between the ages of 11 and 19 who experience severe learning difficulties and profound, multiple and complex medical needs. A growing number of our pupils also have an Autistic spectrum condition. Portland offers co-educational day provision to pupils from a catchment area which covers the city of Sunderland and beyond.

The academy is able to offer a number of part time or assessment placements for identified pupils.

Portland Academy is part of ‘The Ascent Academies’ Trust’, a multi-academy trust which currently consists of 5 special schools across Sunderland, Durham and Stockton. This partnership provides us with a wealth of experience and knowledge and opens up many opportunities for working together to improve outcomes for our pupils.

The school has excellent facilities, including a social café, therapy pool, sensory room, OT Room, woodland walk, outdoor adventure area and bike track. These, together with a relevant, progressive and challenging curriculum delivered and supported by committed staff, enables us to offer a wonderful range of varied opportunities to enrich our pupils’ lives.
