The MFL Department is a friendly, supportive & forward-thinking team, comprising of four well qualified specialist practitioners. As a department, we are committed to developing strong, lifelong linguistic skills. Our teaching staff consistently employ a wide range of strategies to provide students with many opportunities for both collaborative and independent work in each lesson. Our students follow the three-year AQA GCSE Spanish course with the opportunity for further study in the 6th Form.

Job Purpose:
Working closely with the Lead Learner in charge of MFL to facilitate outstanding teaching and learning across the department, which meets the needs of all students and leads to excellent student outcomes.
Main Duties /Responsibilities
- To ensure good or outstanding classroom teaching of MFL;
- Create schemes of learning that are engaging and effective;
- Ability to use assessment to inform planning for good teaching and learning;
- Experience or desire to be involved in a curriculum initiative;
- Ability to differentiate materials to meet the needs of learners;
- Experience or desire to raise standards of achievements;
- Willingness to continue to develop own expertise;
- Ability to build good relationships with students and colleagues;
- Be well organized and able to obtain accurate records;
- Ability to use data to target intervention;
- Ability to evaluate and adapt methods to ensure continuing progress.
- To raise standards of Teaching and Learning across the department and the wider school, monitor progress towards agreed aims, in collaboration with the Lead Learner for MFL.
- To provide specialist subject expertise to assist departmental staff, including co-planning with colleagues and advising and training staff on positive behaviours for learning.
- To ensure high standards of Teaching and Learning in MFL and latterly across the school, through CPD, intervention and with the Lead Learner for MFL via the high quality curriculum and Schemes of work. This will include the production of high quality teaching and learning resources and materials for use across the department and School.
- Teach outstanding lessons, as a model of good practice within your area, engage with students to ensure that they all make exceptional progress. You will maintain an open door policy for other staff to see model practice.
- To lead, develop and enhance the teaching practice of others within your area across the School.
- To work alongside the Lead Learner for MFL to coach and mentor staff in order to develop their teaching.
- Lead groups of CPD activities in area of expertise.
- Support School priorities and targets for the faculty.
TLR – Second in Department
- The post holder will be expected to support the Lead Learner in ensuring that all students make good progress in MFL throughout their time at Abbey College.
- The post holder must have previous Middle leadership experience.
- Specific areas of responsibility will be relevant to the skill set of the successful applicant and will be finalised through the selection process but will include:
- Responsibility for managing a Key Stage including oversight for SEND/PP/HPA outcomes, intervention, curriculum adaptations, enrichment and trips.
- Assist in strategic planning and curriculum development across all Key Stages
- Assist in planning and delivering CPD to support department priorities, including developing the practice of ECTs/non specialist teachers
- Collect, use and analyse data in order to monitor attainment and progress
- Undertake QA activities including learning walks, work scrutinies and moderation of exam marking to help uphold high standards across the team and identify emerging teaching and learning priorities
- Assist in the implementation of department policies and procedures
The post-holder may be expected to carry out other tasks/duties as directed by the Headteacher that are commensurate with the responsibilities of the post.
Wellbeing
- Ensure all pupils have equal access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources, where necessary.
- Liaise with pastoral staff members to ensure the wellbeing of pupils and their full participation in school life.
- Raise any concerns regarding pupils’ behaviour with the relevant Raising Standards Lead.
- Implement any specific arrangements for individual pupils, ensuring that relevant staff members are aware of the measures in place.
- Provide individual pastoral support to pupils, where necessary.
- Continuously motivate and challenge pupils, whilst promoting and reinforcing self-esteem.
Safeguarding
- To have the ability to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
- Appreciate the significance of safeguarding and interprets this accurately for all individual children and young people whatever their life circumstances.
- To have a good understanding of the safeguarding agenda and can demonstrate an ability to contribute towards a safe environment.
- The ability to converse at ease with members of the public and provide advice and information in accurate spoken English is essential for the post.
Variation Clause
- This job description will be reviewed and updated periodically in order to ensure that it relates to the job performed or to incorporate any proposed changes. This procedure will be conducted by the Headteacher or line manager in consultation with the post-holder. In these circumstances it will be the aim to reach agreement on reasonable changes but if agreement is not possible management reserves the right to make changes to the job description following consultation.
