Teacher of Alternative Provision (including PE/PSHE) job summary
Are you looking to inspire children aged between 11 to 16 years, who have been unable to prosper in a mainstream school?
Solihull Academy Trust is an alternative provision where we provide innovative solutions for a number of students for whom mainstream education is simply not working (for a range of reasons). In our short lifetime thus far we have grown considerably and continue to expand as our provision evolves. We now consist of our main site: provision for year 9-11, The Mercury Centre, The Saturn Centre and The Pathfinder Centre (Year 7-8), and we will be welcoming Summerfield Education Centre to the Trust from September 2022.
As we have developed we have continued to recruit committed, passionate and talented staff who ensure a full range of interventions to help change the outcomes of and life chances for our students for the better.
We are seeking to recruit an effective, creative and passionate Teacher of Alternative Provision to include PE and PSHE to help drive forward relatoral teaching and pastoral support and have a real impact on our students. Your role will be to raise student achievement, encourage a love of learning, promote sport and fitness and champion mental health.
The suitable candidate for this essential position will be:
• A qualified teacher able to teach PE, BTEC Sport, and PSHE for KS3 and 4
• Able to provide alternative strategies in their teaching designed to motivate, encourage and enthuse pupils
• Keen to forge positive relationships with challenging pupils
• An excellent, experienced practitioner with a proven record of good results and impact in students of all abilities
• Passionate about realising the potential of all children within a multi-cultural and inclusive school
• Committed to maintaining and nurturing our ethos where all pupils can feel equally valued for their culture and contributions.
This is an opportunity for an ambitious and energetic teacher:
• To take a full and active role in the development, expansion and life of the Academy Trust including pastoral duties.
• To inspire and intervene with students who need a fresh start and new approach to reach their potential.
The Academy leadership team is determined to give our students the best opportunities possible to become successful, responsible citizens with the best life chances. This is another critical appointment for the School, and is an exciting opportunity for you to work in an aspirational,
therapeutic and innovative environment with students who need you.
You will be joining an effective team of staff that have good personal and organisational skills. You must be able to communicate effectively with staff, parents/carers and pupils.
The Senior Leadership Team have an ‘open door’ policy designed to support and motivate in a challenging working environment. We welcome applications from excellent practitioners who love teaching and get satisfaction from making a difference.

"Open a school", they said...so we did...
"It’ll be great", they said...And it was, but also the toughest thing professionally any of us have done.
"So many pupils need something different", they said... and they were correct... our students did and do need something different.
Since April 2018, we have been on a journey to use the idea of “Alternative” in Alternative Provision as a driver to create a new school for the most vulnerable pupils in the local authority, and the impact and results tell us we are making a real difference. Prior to our opening our local authority permanently excluded more secondary students than 90% of the rest of the country despite being the wealthiest borough in the West Midlands. So, in a unique partnership between the Local Authority, mainstream school and ourselves, we built a school, provision and curriculum to combat that and ensure the best possible outcomes for highest tariff students in the local authority. We have developed our school based on 4 specific targets:
- Prevent PEX
- Fewer FTE
- Beat Baseline and/or KS2 targets
- No NEETS
Every decision we make and every action we take is based on these four targets and absolutely child-focused and, from that simple premise, we have created our Academy. If you are looking for a new challenge and have unconditional positive regard, emotional resilience and utter belief that every child deserves a better future, then maybe we and, more importantly, our students need you as part of TeamSA.
