What the school offers its staff

The stakeholders all agree that TGGS is a very special place in which to learn and with over 100 years of academic excellence, we have a strong reputation both locally and nationally. Achievement is consistently high and TGGS has maintained its position as one of the top 20 state girls’ schools in the country for both progress and achievement.

The vision for the future is that TGGS is a beacon of schools in its school leadership and best practice.

Over the years, the school has won many awards, most recently:

  • The Sunday Times south-west state school of the year 2019

  • The UK Parliament School of the Year 2020

  • The real schools guide top school in Devon and Cornwall 2020

However, these facts do not really convey the essence of our school. The students of TGGS are history makers of the future and therefore we are committed and passionate about developing them as a whole individual ensuring that they have the -

  • Best possible academic success

  • Highest self-esteem to make decisions that lead to happiness

  • Character skills to get the jobs that they desire

The best advert for the school is the students themselves: they are delightful, articulate and intelligent individuals. More importantly, they are happy and love their school, as shown by the tears on leavers’ day and their commitment to younger students who join the school. Our alumni is strong and adults often come back to the school either to visit and share experience with younger pupils or with the hope of working here – it really is a great place to be.

Torquay Girls’ Grammar School is a girls’ 11 to 16 selective Single Academy Trust, with a mixed Sixth Form (16 to 18), located in Torquay, Devon.

Our status as a Single Academy Trust means that we have the freedom to implement a curriculum intent which focusses on the whole child: to equip students for a future in which they have the academic qualifications, character skills and self-esteem to make decisions that lead to long, happy and content lives.

Our school is founded on our core values which apply to our whole community: equality, open minded, kindness, collaboration, and well-being.

When Ofsted visited in November 2023, our hard work was recognised by achieving ‘Outstanding’ in every category of the Ofsted Framework. This is no mean feat, and we are incredibly proud of this achievement. Our academic results are consistently high - in the 2025 Sunday Times Schools Guide, we ranked 3rd in Devon and 99th nationally for academic results - which is true testament to the continued dedication from both our students and staff.

Our school is a place where students want to learn and there is a deeply engrained sense of belonging and identity to the school’s history, values and traditions. Staff and pupils fully embrace our House Culture and the opportunities for extra curricular activities and trips.

If you are starting your professional career or are coming with a wealth of experience, you would be joining a school which values every individual within our school community.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, we would love to hear from you!
