What skills and experience we're looking for
We are looking for anArt and Design teacher who would like to work in a school that values equally traditional and cutting-edge technology. Art and Design is highly valued at the College, with the experienced team consistently achieving a +0.50 progress score. Alongside high standards of academic progress, the team have a strong commitment to providing extracurricular opportunities for students. Enrichment and trips are offered across the College, such as; art, ceramics, textiles and photography scholarships, residentials to Iceland for photography and London for art, Leicester print workshop for Graphics GCSE and Burghley House sculpture day.
In Key Stage 3 the team teach across multiple disciplines; from Art and Design, including painting and drawing, textiles and ceramics specialising at Key Stage 4 and 5. Uptake at Key Stage 4 is strong across the broad courses offered; GCSE Art, BTEC Art and Design practice, Graphics, Photography, Design and Technology, Technical Award Engineering, GCSE Food Prep and Nutrition and BTEC hospitality and catering. At Key Stage 5,we have a very successful Art and Design course, alongsideA-level Product Design at Harington School providing furtherpost-16 teaching opportunities.
There are outstanding facilities throughout the Federation with purpose-built spaces offering excellent teaching resources and access to specialist equipment, this includes a photography and graphics studio, 3D ceramics room and 3 additional multipurpose art rooms. As part of the Catmose College expansion, two new additional specialist teaching areas in technology were recently built.
Applications are particularly welcomed from early career teachers who will be well supported by experienced mentors, or from more experienced candidates where there are exceptional opportunities for further professional development and promotion. Catmose College is an oversubscribed secondary academy school on Huntsmans Drive in Oakham, Rutland. The majority of students are drawn from the county town of Oakham and surrounding villages, although many are attracted from a wider area including Leicestershire and Melton through parental choice.
The College is one of the highest achieving in Rutland and Leicestershire. Our Ofsted report in March 2024 rated the College ‘Outstanding’ in all categories. We offer a broad range of experiences beyond the classroom to build independence, resilience and leadership skills that are critical for success in adult life.
We believe in the traditional values of education; that students do best when they are happy, behave well and are engaged in purposeful activity. Our approach blends high expectations with innovative practice to ensure that all students are able to achieve their potential. The College is about much more than just academic success, our ethos is one that embraces the whole person, not just what they accomplish in lessons but everything else that ensures they are ready for the challenges of the adult world. For example, students partake weekly in the ever-popular Electives programme, where lessons finish early to allow time for students to participate in a vast array of over 90 activities and learning, from Caribbean Cooking to Cricket, and Pottery Throw Down to Trampolining.
Students also benefit from an extremely wide array of trips and visits; in previous years these have included a performing arts trip to Liverpool, a photography trip to Iceland, cultural visits to Italy and Spain, a German exchange, a visit to the WWI battlefields and much more.
We pride ourselves on offering a bespoke approach to students’ needs, whether they are more able or need some extra support. Music, Sport and Academic Scholarships are awarded annually to students who can demonstrate excellent ability in their chosen area. The scholarships are designed to recognise exceptional talent and to provide the facilities, resources and staffing to allow high-ability students to achieve their potential.
