Teacher of Art with Graphics job summary

Didcot Girls’ School is a dynamic school. In November 2022, the school was judged  as continuing to be Outstanding. As Ofsted recognised, we invest in all of our staff:

“Leaders support staff very well. They have established a collaborative and respectful working environment. With the trust, they provide highly valued training and leadership programmes. Staff are exceptionally proud to work at the school.”

Ofsted also noted the high standards within the school and commented that “Pupils’ behaviour is exemplary.”

We are a values-driven school, committed to high quality teaching and learning and respectful relationships within an inclusive learning community. Developing stimulating and student-centred teaching and learning is at the centre of our school development work. We work hard to ensure that all girls’ education enables our students to develop confidence, leadership skills and high levels of aspiration.

We are committed to continuous professional development and have wide-ranging training and development opportunities. We are also mindful of the competing demands people face in their lives and make every effort to accommodate flexible working.

Summer 2023 GCSE results were superb with 85% of all students achieving 4+ in English and Maths, and 71% doing the same at 5+.  Results at A level in the mixed sixth form shared with our partner school, St Birinus School, are also extremely strong with 34% of grades awarded as A* or A and 66% achieving Grades A*-B. These results place us as one of the highest performing schools in the county.

The Post

This is a key post in a very strong department. We are looking for someone with a genuine and infectious passion for Art who will enthuse and engage the students they teach, someone with high expectations for all students and very strong subject knowledge. The successful applicant will teach through all three key stages.

The Department

The Art & Graphics Department comprises three subject specialists, including the newly appointed Head of Department. The department is accommodated in specialist rooms and ably supported with technician support throughout the week.

The school hosts its own art gallery, the Freeborn Gallery, and exhibits the work of local artists as well as our own students’ work on a regular basis. The Gallery is also used to foster cross-curricular links and projects with other subjects.

As well as the Freeborn Gallery we have a student gallery, that showcases a range of work across the Key Stages and a competition gallery space where students can win prizes on a bi-termly basis.

Curriculum

Art is taught across the key stages as a valued subject.  Key Stage 3 comprises year 7, year 8 and year 9 and students have one lesson a week of art.

The take up for GCSE for Art and Graphics is strong: we have between two and three groups running in each year across both Art and Design and Graphics. Students enjoy a rich and dynamic curriculum.  The GCSE courses follow the AQA specification and offer students depth and breadth of study, through a variety of art disciplines and creative pathways.

In Key Stage 5 there are between one and two Art and Design groups and usually one Graphics group. Students have their own studio space and full access to all of the art facilities. The Key Stage 5 groups are currently taught at St Birinus School but some of the teaching will be at Didcot Girls’ School next academic year.

Outcomes

The Department achieves consistently excellent outcomes which are above or in line with national averages for girls.
