Teacher of Computer Science job summary

All Year 7, 8 and 9 students (Key Stage 3) have one Computing lesson a week based around short projects that develop students’ computational and problem solving thinking. They will also look at the hardware and software required to facilitate different ICT systems and will apply computing and ICT skills to specific situations.

In addition, they have a second hour of study where they further develop ICT skills and also study basic elements of Enterprise, Business and Economics to provide them with a foundation for KS4 and to build their workplace skills for the future.

At Key Stage 4 students can choose Creative i-media, GCSE Computer Science, GCSE Business Studies, GCSE Economics and NCFE Certificate in Business and Enterprise if they wish to continue to study Enterprise subjects. These are taught in option pools of three hours per week with examination at the end of Year 11. Students also have the opportunity to study the NCFE qualification on 1 hour per week as an additional, enrichment opportunity to develop essential skills for their future.

At Key Stage 5 Computer Science or BTEC Level 3 ICT are offered as options on five hours a week. Excellent results are achieved and ICT is always a popular A level subject.
We also offer three options for Business and Economics; either AQA GCE Economics; AQA GCE Business; or BTEC Level 3 Business and have strong numbers and a high success rate. BTEC Level 3 Business can also be studied across 10 hours a week across 2 years, providing students with a qualification equivalent to 2 A levels at the end of the course.

Enterprise is one of the most popular A/AS level subject areas in the Academy and this can be attributed to the exceptionally high quality teaching and learning, a stimulating and relevant curriculum and excellent results. We achieve very strong results in Year 13 to make a significant positive contribution to CVA.

In addition to our core curriculum, we also offer many extra-curricular activity opportunities to students across all 3 Key Stages, including young Enterprise clubs and competitions; a robotics club and computer programming clubs. Each year we provide the opportunity for KS4 and KS5 students to participate on the National Enterprise Challenge and National Skills Challenge.

After-Academy and lunch-time use of the facilities by students is popular and cross-curricular use of ICT continues to increase with computer clubs running on all campuses.

We benefit from a strong local reputation which is the reason we have increased our admission number to 410. Our expansion has been facilitated by the acquisition of a third site for our popular Sixth Form in the town centre. This has led to a re-organisation of our students, with Year 7 and Year 8 educated at the Dove Campus and Years 9-11 at the Trent Campus, which are half a mile apart.

We were delighted by our January 2017 Ofsted inspection which emphasised the outstanding aspects of our work, including high levels of progress and attainment. We value our staff team, and this is reflected in the wide range of professional development opportunities which are offered both internally and externally. In recent years, we have developed an international reputation for learning technologies, becoming both an Apple Distinguished School and Regional Training Centre; we provide a 1-to-1 iPad programme for all students in Year 9-Year 13.
