Herne Bay High Schools Dance Academy are looking for a part-time (0.6) maternity cover teacher for their thriving and exciting department.
The successful candidate will join our well-established team of qualified staff and will ideally be able to teach to BTEC National standard as well as KS3 and GCSE Dance. If experienced, there may be the opportunity to take a lead role in the managing and delivering of the GCSE Dance course and/or the Bronze Arts Award. They would also be expected to support our exciting extra-curricular programme.
Our Dance department is situated in three purpose-built studios directly linked to the school's Theatre to enhance performance opportunities for all students. We offer the unique situation that all students at Key Stage 3 have a timetabled Dance lesson every week. Students in Year 7 and 8 have a single dance lesson every fortnight throughout the year, whilst Year 9 students have a double lesson every week if they select Dance as an option in Year 9. GCSE dance is offered as an option in year 10 into 11 and at sixth form we run a level 2 and level 3 option. An exciting aspect of our 6th form curriculum is the opportunity to take the Full course Dance Pathway. Students following this course study the Level 3 Extended Diploma and are full time dance students within the Academy.
Dance is taught in mixed ability and co-educational groups in years 7-13 by four specialist staff.
Requirements for this role:
- Hold Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Have experience teaching dance (primarily Contemporary) in secondary schools, specifically up to GCSE and ideally to BTEC level 3.
- Have a genuine desire to become part of a committed team of subject specialists.
- Have a passion for teaching dance with the ability to plan and deliver inspiring lessons.
- The ability to cover the maternity period between September 2024- January 2025 with some flexibility.

Herne Bay High is a highly successful, innovative school that prides itself on its culture of high expectations and traditional values, particularly relating to respect, discipline and behaviour. We are passionate about supporting every child to achieve their full academic potential, whilst developing our students into responsible, mature and confident young people.
The curriculum will be the principal means whereby students’ entitlement to a broad and relevant education can be fulfilled. Statutory requirements , including those relating to the National Curriculum, will be observed and implemented; the School will strive to provide all our students with a challenging and engaging educational experience tailored to their abilities and interests at KS3 and a personalised KS4 and sixth form experience. Our focus is to equip our students with the requisite skills and knowledge to flourish in our rapidly changing world.
The School is not only an educational community of adults and young people but also an important part of the local community. The awareness of students to both of these features will be encouraged; the ethos of the School will be directed to this end.
Herne Bay High will strive for excellence and high quality provision in all aspects of the curriculum, students learning, progress and development. Young people need to complete their period of schooling with high self-esteem, confidence, wider horizons and a range of appropriate qualifications, skills and personal attributes.
Little of this can be achieved by students without hard work, the desire to learn, enjoyment, care for one another and creative, co-operative endeavour; this the School aims to achieve with all members of the School community.
Our School Message
No action of mine should cause hurt or unhappiness to any other member of our school community.
I will try my best to treat everyone and everything with consideration and respect.
I will remember that every public action of mine outside school is judged to the credit or discredit of the whole school community.
There may be times when I fail to live up to these standards. When this happens I will be honest with myself and with others, admitting my mistakes and doing all in my power to put things right.
This school aims to concentrate on the success and achievement of individuals and not on their failure.
PRIDE is a key word in the community of Herne Bay High School - we all have a part to play in achieving a successful and happy school.
