Department Information

We would like to appoint an outstanding Teacher of Drama. The successful candidate will teach Drama at key stage 3 and at GCSE and may contribute to the teaching of A-level Drama courses.

The Music and Drama department work closely together and currently consists of five full-time staff and seven part time peripatetic music staff. We have also regularly supported trainee teachers within the department. Standards in the department are high with students achieving well academically and taking full advantage of the extensive range of extra-curricular opportunities provided. Drama and Music are a valued feature of school life, with many productions, performances and concerts taking place throughout the year.

In key stage 3 students are timetabled for an hour per week for Drama and are usually taught in classes of about 16. The department offers examination courses in Drama at GCSE and A level, following the Edexcel specifications. Recent examination results in Drama are incredibly pleasing with a 100% 9-5 (A*-C) pass rate in each of the last five years as well as a 97% grade 7-9 pass rate over the last two years.

Facilities for Drama include a large Drama Studio as well as a smaller classroom sized room dedicated for drama. The Drama Studio includes a stage, PA system, acoustic piano, full curtaining and storage for a range of props. It has also been fitted with a professional digital lighting display. School productions and performances also take place in the main school hall, which has a large stage that is also equipped with lighting and sound.

The Drama department makes a strong commitment to the extra-curricular life of the school. There are regular performances from our junior ‘Youth Theatre Group’ and our more senior ‘Nameless Theatre Company’ that tackles theatre-in-education performances.
In addition, there are regular public performances by our GCSE and A level groups. The Drama and Music department often work together at performances with showcases, concerts and productions. Our regular full school musicals are of a very high standard. Some of the recent productions from the department include We Will Rock You, Little Shop of Horrors and Return to the Forbidden Planet. Rehearsals were underway for a production of Grease early last year, which we aim to resume once restrictions allow. The annual House Drama and House Music competitions involve large numbers of students too.

Whilst it is unlikely to be required next year, it is desirable that candidates are willing and able to teach year 7 music when required. Consideration will be given to both experienced teachers and NQTs who wish to develop their teaching expertise in an outstanding school. For the Music and Drama department at Heckmondwike, commitment, a positive attitude, ideas, potential and enthusiasm are important qualities.
