Teacher of English job summary

We are seeking to employ English Teachers who are passionate about their subject and who are committed to developing high standards of literacy so that the life chances of all students are enhanced. The post provides an opportunity to work within our Alternative Provision which requires patience and resilience as well as an enthusiasm for English and an ability to be creative and think outside the box in order to capture the interest and engagement of the students.
Within the four secondary academies of Archway Learning Trust English teachers share a strong commitment towards collaborative learning and colleagues work hard to ensure that all students have the best possible experience of English. Our aim as an English team is to provide the building blocks of progress so that students are enthused and engaged in their learning. Lessons provide a range of learning strategies to support all students to access the basic concepts and skills of English and to flourish in their reading and writing and become passionate about their learning. The work of colleagues within the academies is often shared and adapted by the staff at Aspire.

Senior Leaders across the Trust are committed to raising standards in literacy and there are many enriching initiatives in place so all barriers to learning are removed and all students can access every element of the curriculum. Currently all four academies and teachers at Aspire are working in partnership with the National Literacy Trust on the Literacy for Life initiative which brings with it a range of training opportunities for all staff. The national leadership of the National Literacy Trust are impressed with the work being done at Aspire and a fully complimentary about the steps being taken to tackle illiteracy.
Those students who attend the Alternative Provision at Aspire are able to access the same learning opportunities which are available in a main stream setting and teachers at Aspire in collaboration with Senior Leaders across the Trust work hard to ensure that there are engaging and creative approaches to learning. Literacy is fundamental to the learning journey at Aspire.

Key Stage 3 Students follow a similar curriculum to those students in our other four academies, albeit with a greater focus on literacy and the creative curriculum. Students will study and explore such texts as ‘Private Peaceful’, ‘Skellig’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’ and they will have the opportunity to explore a range of writing styles and write with a sense of purpose and audience. There will be a focus on Functional Skills for Year 9 , who will then work through a Step up to English Programme to support their transition to GCSE.

Key Stage 4 Students at Aspire will follow from September 2020 AQA specifications and will study for both English Language’ and English Literature. Texts for Literature will include ‘Macbeth’, ‘A Christmas Carol’ and ‘Blood Brothers’ together with Conflict Poetry.
Candidates should pay attention to the job description/person specification and explain within their application how they meet the criteria, whilst also describing what they will bring to the post from their own knowledge and experience.

Our Alternative Provision is currently based at the Glenbrook Management Centre but colleagues may also be required to teach across the Trust.

Commitment to safeguarding

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. This post is subject to the satisfactory completion of an enhanced DBS check, Barred List check, the receipt of satisfactory references, online searches and any other statutory checks that are required for the post. We are an equal opportunities employer.
