Bourne Community College is a mixed comprehensive Trust school for students aged eleven to sixteen and is situated on the border of West Sussex and Hampshire, with the beautiful South Downs and surrounding villages to the north and the coastal waters of Chichester Harbour to the south.

Within the College we have a strong focus on high quality teaching and learning, supported by excellent staff development and an active student voice group. We believe that the very best learning takes place when students and adults work together in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. We, of course, have very high expectations for our students’ behaviour and they in turn can have equally high expectations for the quality of their lessons.

The English Department

We are a collaborative and motivated team who have a passion for teaching and seeing our students achieve their potential.

The English classrooms are based together and each room is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and visualiser. We have a shared resource area where all books and stationary are kept and this is within easy reach of the main classrooms. We have an excellent Library and Resource Centre, running the Accelerated Reader programme, and everyone in the department works closely with our librarian. We also have access to a number of computer rooms and have a set of Chrome-Books which can be used with students for learning activities.

Students are taught in mixed ability groups in year 7 with support offered to the weaker students. From year 8, students are streamed into ability classes. We offer a varied and stimulating curriculum which aims to allow students to develop into creative and critical thinkers with an excellent command of both the written and spoken word.
GCSE classes are taught in ability groups and we study the AQA syllabus at Key Stage 4. All of our students study both Language and Literature.

We are committed to offering our students an engaging and enriching curriculum both inside and outside the classroom. We regularly have visiting authors and poets in school and students have the opportunity to go on trips to the theatre and other relevant places of interest. The Librarian runs a number of successful book clubs and we offer extensive opportunities for students to build on their English skills outside the classroom.
